Why Protego does not stop the Killing Curse
Protego creates an invisible shield that can deflect certain spells or weaken stronger ones, according to the official Protego entry. That general description does not mean it blocks every spell.
The official Killing Curse entry is explicit: “There is no way to block the spell, and there is no counter-curse – it can only be dodged.” The specific rule for Avada Kedavra therefore takes precedence over Protego’s broader defensive purpose.
How Harry survived Avada Kedavra
Harry’s survival was an exceptional case, not evidence that Protego can stop the curse. The official entry attributes his protection to Lily Potter’s sacrifice, which caused the curse to rebound on Voldemort. It does not describe Lily’s protection as an ordinary Shield Charm.
