If your Xbox controller won’t connect to Bluetooth, first confirm that your exact controller model supports Bluetooth and has enough power. Put it in pairing mode near your Windows PC; if it is already listed but will not reconnect, remove it from Windows Bluetooth settings and pair it again. Then refresh Bluetooth, run Windows’ troubleshooter, and check for updates.
Check the controller and PC before pairing
Not every Xbox controller supports Bluetooth. Confirm the model’s specifications, and make sure the PC has Bluetooth enabled. A low battery can prevent a device from entering pairing mode or staying connected, so charge or replace the batteries before troubleshooting further. Microsoft lists battery, pairing state, range, drivers, services, updates, and device or PC configuration among possible causes of Bluetooth connection problems: Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.
Pair the controller again in Windows
- On the controller, use its Pair button to enter pairing mode. Button behavior can vary by model, so check the documentation for your controller if it does not become discoverable.
- Keep the controller close to the PC, with Bluetooth enabled on the PC. Windows requires a Bluetooth device to be in pairing mode and within range to find it.
- In Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and check whether the controller is already listed. If it is listed but will not connect, select it, choose Remove device, and confirm.
- Choose Add device > Bluetooth, wait for the controller to appear, then select it to pair.
Windows labels can differ slightly by version. Microsoft’s pairing instructions are available in its Windows Bluetooth device pairing guide.
Refresh Windows Bluetooth and run its troubleshooter
If pairing again does not help, turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on. On Windows 11, Microsoft recommends starting with the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Check Windows Update for available updates and restart the PC if the problem persists. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps for the current guidance.

- High fidelity low latency codecs - Ensures audio sync, enhances gaming performance
- Compatibility - Works with most Bluetooth headphones.
- Stable performance - Uninterrupted play with your favorite wireless headphones
- Built-in Mic - Supports voice chat independently without connecting a headphone (works same as PS5 controller)
- Powered directly by controllers - Uses less than 1W battery power
Check firmware or test with a USB cable
If you can access an Xbox console, Microsoft’s controller troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for controller firmware updates in the console’s Accessories settings. You can also update through the Xbox Accessories app on a Windows PC. If an update fails, try another compatible USB data cable; depending on the controller, its port may be USB-C or Micro-USB. Microsoft’s Xbox controller troubleshooting video covers firmware and cable checks.
A wired connection is useful for a temporary test or firmware update, not a Bluetooth repair. If the controller works over USB but not Bluetooth, that narrows the issue toward the wireless connection, but does not identify a specific fault on its own.

- 【OLED Display and Effortless Device Information Access】 The screen simplifies pairing the Microsoft Xbox wireless adapter with all Bluetooth headphones, earbuds. It can intuitively display volume, codec format, mic status, and paired Bluetooth devices.⚠️ Important Pairing Tip:Pairing requires holding both Vol+ & Vol- simultaneously until "Searching" appears.
- 【aptX Low Latency】The codec ensures synchronized audio, stepping you into the world of wireless gaming with our Xbox One Bluetooth adapter. Low latency requires your headphones to also support this technology.
- 【Wide Compatibility】The Xbox audio adapter is designed for Xbox One, Series X, Series S, and Elite Series 2 Wireless Controllers with 3.5mm audio jack. It does not support the first-generation Xbox controller and the Elite 1 controller.
- 【Upgraded Tech】Powered directly by the controller, the Xbox headset adapter delivers low energy consumption. It further conserves power by automatically dimming the screen after 10 seconds of inactivity. This design is enhanced by two indicator lights, giving quick feedback on the adapter and mic status.
- 【Note】Even after the transmitter is powered off, the mic remains active when the mute switch is leftward. Sliding it right activates the mute indicator light, disabling the mic. The mic can function independently without paired headphones. Additionally, the adapter doesn't support the microphone of Bluetooth headhones.
Isolate whether the problem is the controller or the PC
If possible, test the controller with another Bluetooth host and test the PC with another Bluetooth device. These cross-checks help identify which side to investigate; a failure can stem from the controller or its pairing state, or from the PC’s adapter, driver, Bluetooth service, updates, or configuration. Microsoft identifies these as possible causes, so do not assume the controller is defective based on the symptom alone.
If multiple Bluetooth devices fail on the PC, focus on Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting and the PC’s adapter, driver, or service. Avoid registry edits, unofficial driver replacements, or power-management changes as routine fixes.

Does controller generation or Windows version matter?
Yes. Bluetooth capability and firmware features depend on the controller model. In a September 8, 2021 announcement, Xbox Wire said that an update for Xbox One controllers with Bluetooth support, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and Xbox Adaptive Controllers added Bluetooth Low Energy and improved cross-device connectivity. With that update, those supported controllers could remember one Bluetooth host and one Xbox Wireless host, and switch between previously connected hosts with a double tap of the Pair button. This is specific to the models and firmware described in the Xbox Wire announcement; it should not be assumed for every Xbox controller.
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Its Bluetooth settings may still work on a PC that is running Windows 10, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that operating system. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
