There are four Chroma Elixir Paint Cage areas listed for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: Hovering Waters, Ancient Sanctuary, the Cave in the Stone Wave Cliffs, and Forgotten Battlefield. Open each cage by using free-aim to shoot its three nearby energy orbs; the orbs can be hidden from view, so check around the cage from different angles.
How to open a Chroma Elixir Paint Cage
- Find the cage and switch to free-aim.
- Search the surrounding area for three energy orbs. Look from more than one position if you cannot see them all at once.
- Shoot all three orbs to unlock the cage.
The three-orb mechanism is described in both the VGTimes location guide, dated May 13, 2025, and the Zestico guide, dated June 20, 2025.

Ancient Sanctuary
From the last flag in Great Bell Alley, backtrack. At the first turn, go right and cross the stones toward the orb and cage area.
Cave in the Stone Wave Cliffs
The cave is across the strait east of Stone Wave Cliffs. At the fork before the boss, turn left, crawl under the rock, climb the thread, then go around the stone pillars to reach the cage.

Forgotten Battlefield
Start at the Ancient Bridge flag and head toward the bunkers; turn right to look for the cage. The Battlefield route may include a concealed path, so inspect the surroundings if the cage is not immediately visible.
What Chroma Elixir does
Chroma Elixir restores health outside combat. VGTimes distinguishes it from Healing Tonic, which restores health during combat. The sources do not clearly establish the final number of charges or a definitive set of story gates for these upgrades, so this guide does not assign a total capacity.

How reliable is the location checklist?
VGTimes names four areas and supplies the location notes above. Zestico also discusses Paint Cages and the three-lock mechanic, but its headings and route transitions are difficult to reconcile with that four-area checklist. Treat its directions as supplemental rather than evidence for a different total.
