Which is better: Meta Quest 3S or PS VR2?
Neither headset is the better choice for every player: they serve different setups. Quest 3S is a self-contained wireless headset for games, fitness, entertainment, apps, and mixed reality. PS VR2 is a wired PS5 accessory, with a feature set designed around compatible console games. The deciding questions are whether you want to be tethered to a PS5 and whether standalone use or PS5-specific immersion matters more to you.

These are manufacturer specifications, not a direct performance test. Resolution, refresh rate, display type, optics, and field of view do not establish which headset looks sharper or feels more comfortable to a particular player.
Do you need a PS5 for PS VR2?
For console VR, yes: PS VR2 connects to a PS5. It does not work with PS4, and games for the original PlayStation VR are not compatible. Sony’s compatibility information explains which PlayStation setup and games are supported.

PS VR2’s distinctive features are most relevant on PS5. Sony lists eye tracking and foveated rendering, headset feedback, Sense controller haptics and adaptive triggers, and Tempest 3D AudioTech. These features depend on compatible games, so their presence in the headset does not mean every title uses all of them.
Can Quest 3S play games without a PC?
Yes. Quest 3S is a standalone wireless headset: you can use its Quest software without connecting a PC or console. Meta describes it as an “all-in-one wireless headset” and lists color passthrough, so it can also support mixed-reality experiences that blend digital content with a view of your surroundings. Its Touch Plus controllers provide haptics, and the headset supports hand tracking and controller-free navigation.

Meta lists an average battery run time of 2.5 hours. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed session length; actual duration varies with use, settings, battery age, Bluetooth use, and wireless conditions. A PC connection is optional rather than a requirement for ordinary standalone gaming.
How do the displays and controls compare?
On paper, PS VR2 has higher per-eye resolution, OLED displays, and a wider listed field of view. Quest 3S lists several refresh-rate modes and separate horizontal and vertical field-of-view figures. The specifications are not directly interchangeable: panel type, lenses, rendering, game implementation, fit, and individual perception all affect the experience. The published numbers alone do not prove a winner for sharpness or comfort.

The control systems reflect the platforms. Quest 3S combines Touch Plus controllers with hand tracking and controller-free navigation. PS VR2’s Sense controllers add adaptive triggers and haptics, while the headset adds feedback and eye tracking on PS5. Those PS VR2 features are game-dependent rather than guaranteed in every experience.
Can you use PS VR2 on a PC?
Yes, but it is not a plug-and-play replacement for a normal PC display or a cable-free PC headset. Sony supports PS VR2 on compatible Windows PCs through SteamVR, with a dedicated adapter and other requirements. Its PC setup and requirements page specifies:

- Supported Nvidia or AMD graphics hardware; Sony recommends an RTX 3060 or later, or Radeon RX 6600 XT or later, for best performance.
- A dedicated DisplayPort 1.4 output, USB 3.0, and Bluetooth 4.0 or later.
- Sony’s PS VR2 PC adapter and a separately sold DisplayPort 1.4 cable.
- Steam, SteamVR, and the PlayStation VR2 app.
On PC, PS VR2 does not support HDR output, eye tracking, headset feedback, adaptive triggers, or the controllers’ full haptic feedback; basic vibration is supported. Check compatibility for your specific components and Bluetooth hardware before buying the adapter.
Quest 3S also has a PC route: Meta supports Link Cable and Air Link, and says Steam games can be streamed from a computer through Steam Link. This streams PC content to the headset; it does not make the experience equivalent to native standalone play or guarantee particular network performance or image quality.

How much do the headsets cost, including the system?
Compare the headset with the hardware needed for the way you plan to use it. The following figures have different contexts: Meta’s are live US store listings observed on October 7, 2026, while Sony’s is an announced recommended retail price effective March 2025, not a live retailer quote.

Sony announced regional recommended retail prices of €449.99, £399.99, and ¥66,980 alongside the US price, with timing and bundle availability varying by country or region. Check the local live listing before buying; an announced RRP does not confirm current stock or checkout price. Meta’s former Quest 3S launch price is not a current-price guide.
Which headset should you buy?
Choose Meta Quest 3S if you want standalone freedom
- You want to play wirelessly without buying or connecting a PS5 or PC.
- You want both VR and color-passthrough mixed-reality apps.
- You want the option to connect to a PC later, but do not want a computer to be essential.
- You are comfortable treating battery life as a session constraint and checking the live price for your region.
Choose PS VR2 if you already have a PS5
- You want a wired headset built for compatible PS5 VR games.
- You value OLED displays and the listed eye-tracking, foveated-rendering, controller, headset-feedback, and 3D-audio features.
- You are willing to check game compatibility, since not every title uses every feature.
Consider PS VR2 for PC only after checking the requirements
PC support makes PS VR2 another option for SteamVR, but factor in the adapter, separate cable, compatible hardware, and the features unavailable on PC. If you do not already own a PS5, compare the full cost and requirements of the PC setup against a standalone headset rather than comparing headset prices alone.
