A standard edition usually gets you the game; a deluxe edition may add digital bonuses, physical extras, or both; and a collector’s edition often adds displayable or printed collectibles. Those are conventions, not guarantees. The edition name alone cannot tell you whether the base game is included, whether it is on disc, or whether an artbook or soundtrack is physical. Check the exact listing for your game, platform, and region before buying.
What do the edition names usually mean?
Standard edition
A standard edition generally includes the base game, but the exact package can include small extras. For example, Square Enix lists FINAL FANTASY VII Remake Standard Edition with the base game and a reversible cover. See Square Enix’s edition contents list.
Deluxe edition
“Deluxe” can describe in-game content, digital downloads, physical collectibles, or a mix. In Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY VII Remake comparison, Physical Deluxe includes the base game, Cactuar Summoning Materia, a reversible cover, SteelBook case, physical soundtrack, and physical artbook. Digital Deluxe includes the game, Cactuar and Carbuncle summoning materia, and digital versions of the soundtrack and artbook. The name is the same tier, but the format and contents differ.
Collector’s edition
A collector’s edition often adds tangible items such as a statue or figure, artbook, SteelBook, or soundtrack. It may include a deluxe copy of the game, but do not assume that it does. Bandai Namco’s description of a collector’s edition as a limited physical bundle is its own publisher’s characterization, not a binding industry definition. Publishers use these labels differently.

Stranger Than Heaven: Collector's Edition - PlayStation 5
- Face Down Fate: San Francisco, 1915. Orphaned and persecuted for his mixed American and Japanese heritage, young Makoto Daito sneaks aboard a mysterious ship. Rejected by the United States, he risks everything to seek belonging in his mother’s homeland: Japan.
- 5 Eras, 5 Cities: The story unfolds across a version of Japan that may have existed in another life, immersing you in 5 sprawling cities: 1915, Kokura, Fukuoka; 1929, Kure, Hiroshima; 1943, Minami, Osaka; 1951, Atami, Shizuoka; and 1965, Shinjuku, Tokyo.
- Extreme Violence: Experience this struggle through the raw brutality of an evolving combat system that feels alive. You won't just control Makoto Daito, you'll become him—moving his left and right sides independently to attack, defend, and force your way to victory.
- Life of a Showman: Early on, Makoto's guide and mentor discovers his hidden talent for music, and before long, Makoto finds himself not only singing a tune or two but stepping into the role of a showman, producing a variety of incredible acts throughout all of Japan.
- Collector's Edition includes: STRANGER THAN HEAVEN Base Game (Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5), Deluxe Upgrade & Pre-Order Bonus DLC Codes, Exclusive SteelBook Case, Exclusive 12-Inch Vinyl Record, and Exclusive Collector’s Edition Box
What to check before you buy
- Confirm the game is included. Check whether the package contains the base game, an expansion, an upgrade, or only collector’s items. A collector’s edition may not include the game at all.
- Check the game format. Look for a disc, cartridge, download code, or digital entitlement. A SteelBook can be an empty case, so verify that the listing says the game itself is included.
- Match the listing to your platform and region. Contents and formats can differ between console and PC versions and between markets.
- Separate physical items from digital bonuses. A soundtrack or artbook may be a download rather than a printed or playable physical item. DLC and in-game extras may require redemption or an internet connection; check the listing’s terms.
- Assess the collectible you would actually keep. Check its stated dimensions and materials, and consider the display space it needs. A longer contents list does not establish an item’s quality or value.
- Compare the actual price and availability. Decide whether the specific extras justify the premium to you. Limited stock does not guarantee that an edition will appreciate in resale value.
Examples of how much the contents can vary
| Edition example | What the publisher lists | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| FINAL FANTASY VII Remake Standard | Base game and reversible cover | The standard tier can include a small bonus. |
| FINAL FANTASY VII Remake Physical Deluxe | Base game, Cactuar Summoning Materia, reversible cover, SteelBook, physical soundtrack, and physical artbook | Its soundtrack and artbook are listed as physical items. |
| FINAL FANTASY VII Remake Digital Deluxe | Base game, Cactuar and Carbuncle summoning materia, digital soundtrack, and digital artbook | Digital Deluxe is not the same physical package as Physical Deluxe. |
| FINAL FANTASY VII Remake 1st Class | Square Enix lists the Play Arts Cloud Strife and Hardy Daytona box set with much of the Deluxe package | Check the linked contents list for the complete package details. |
| Shadow of the Erdtree Collector’s Edition | Expansion voucher, original soundtrack, 46 cm Messmer statue, and 40-page hardcover artbook | Bandai Namco explicitly says the Elden Ring Standard Edition game is not included. Its separate Deluxe Edition lists the game and expansion with digital artbooks and soundtracks. Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring listing. |
| Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Collector’s Edition | Deluxe copy, 31 cm Edward Kenway figurine, leather logbook, and metal brooch | Ubisoft lists a physical console copy (one disc on PS5 and Xbox Series X) and a digital PC version. The current listing says quantities are limited; check local availability. Ubisoft’s Collector’s Edition page. |
| FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION editions | Square Enix lists Physical Standard with the game; Day 1 with a promotional Magic: The Gathering card; Physical Deluxe with the game, card, soundtrack, artbook, and SteelBook; and Collector’s Edition with a Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth statue plus listed digital/game content | The page says some future DLC schedules are planned and subject to change, so treat those dates as provisional. Square Enix’s official game page. |
Which edition should you choose?
- Choose Standard if the game is what you want and the other items do not justify extra cost for you.
- Choose Deluxe if you have checked the specific bonuses and value them enough to pay the difference. Confirm whether they are physical or digital.
- Choose Collector’s if you actively want the physical collectibles and have verified that the package includes the game in the format you want.
These are practical decision rules, not a ranking: no tier is automatically the best value. For a broader explanation of resale uncertainty, Bandai Namco’s guide notes that resale depends on the title, print run, and ongoing demand, and characterizes buying as an investment as a gamble: Bandai Namco’s collector’s edition guide.
