Set a gaming budget you can afford after essential bills and savings, then decide in advance how much of it can go to collector’s editions. Before buying one, compare its delivered price with the specific physical and digital extras you actually want—not just the number of items in the box. There is no evidence-based universal amount to spend, and the available spending figures are context, not targets.
Set a spending limit that fits your finances
Choose a monthly or annual allowance only after covering essential obligations and savings goals. Use whichever period is easiest to track, and keep a running total that includes tax and shipping where applicable. Treat the limit as a ceiling, not a target to reach.
Divide that allowance into categories that reflect how you play, such as new releases, collector’s editions, older games and optional digital purchases. If an edition would push you past the limit, decide what you would give up before ordering rather than treating the extra as an exception.
Know what you are paying for
“Collector’s edition” usually signals physical extras, while Deluxe or Ultimate editions may primarily add digital content such as downloadable content, a season pass or in-game items. Names alone do not establish what is included: check the listing for the exact edition and region, and confirm whether the base game is part of the package.
#1 Best Overall

- A THRILLING ESPIONAGE ADVENTURE - Embark on missions in breathtaking locations, drive iconic vehicles, and dive into a cinematic adventure in pursuit of a rogue agent who’s always one step ahead.

- WELCOME TO MI6 - Test your skills and replay your favorite missions with additional modifiers, for endless espionage fun!
Compare the total price with the individual contents. Physical items can include a figurine, artbook, SteelBook, soundtrack or special packaging; digital bonuses may have different value to someone who mainly wants to play. An impressive item count is not the same as personal value. Bandai Namco’s examples include Elden Ring statues in different sizes, as well as packages with artbooks, SteelBooks and other collectibles, illustrating why the actual contents and display footprint matter. Bandai Namco’s guide to collector’s editions describes these distinctions.
Use a quick test before preordering
- Separate the game from the extras. Would you still want the game if the collectibles were not included?
- Name the items you value. Identify the specific extras you would use, display or keep; do not count every included item as equally worthwhile.
- Confirm the package. Check whether the game is included, which physical and digital items are listed, and whether any region or retailer restrictions apply.
- Compare alternatives. Ask whether the same amount would bring you more enjoyment as several games, a standard edition, or a later purchase.
- Choose your timing. Decide whether immediate access matters more than waiting for reviews or a possible discount. Waiting may mean missing a limited package, so weigh that trade-off against the value of the extras.
For multiple editions, compare total delivered price, physical items and their size, digital content, base-game inclusion, restrictions and whether each extra is independently desirable. This keeps the decision tied to what you will receive rather than to a label or a claimed future resale price.

Make discount-waiting and skipping releases part of the plan
Buying fewer games or waiting for discounts are legitimate ways to manage a crowded release calendar. In the BCG Global Gaming Survey 2025, as reported in Boston Consulting Group’s 2026 Video Gaming Report, 49% of respondents said they wait for discounts when multiple games in the same franchise release in one year; 31% said they buy one and skip the others. These are reported choices in that specific scenario, not guaranteed savings or a forecast of what any particular game will cost later.
If your main goal is playing rather than owning a particular package, a gaming subscription may be another access option. It may not satisfy a collecting goal, and its current price and catalogue need to be checked separately.

Use spending statistics as context, not a personal target
Bitkom e.V. reported in 2026 that German gamers who did not exclusively play free games spent an average of €334 on computer and video games over the prior 12 months, excluding hardware. Its reported average for the highest-spending quarter of those gamers was €781. The figures came from a representative survey conducted by Bitkom Research in Germany during calendar weeks 20–24, with 1,205 people aged 16 and over, including 663 gamers. They describe a particular population and period; they do not establish what an individual should spend or how much went to collector’s editions. Bitkom’s release and survey details provide the scope.
A 2016 GfK survey for Germany’s game industry association found that 28% of German players surveyed had bought collector’s editions, and 29% of gamers said bonus levels, missions or special in-game equipment justified the higher price. The survey covered 2,026 German-speaking internet users aged 14 and older. These historical findings help describe past attitudes, not current buying rates or today’s edition prices. The association’s 2016 summary reports the findings.

Do not count on resale to make the purchase pay off
Do not treat a collector’s edition as an investment in your budget. Bandai Namco says resale outcomes depend on the title, print run and continuing community interest, and describes buying an edition for financial gain as a gamble. Buy only if the game and contents are worth the price to you without assuming they will later sell for more.
