What kind of game is Choo-Choo Charles?
Choo-Choo Charles is a single-player survival-horror game. You travel around an island by locomotive, take missions from settlers, collect scrap, and spend it improving your train before facing Charles, a spider-like train that hunts you. The loop combines exploration and preparation with confrontations against the threat.
The setup is the game’s clearest selling point: the train is both your way around the island and your means of fighting back. The official Steam listing describes it as single-player; the sources available do not document a later co-op release. An October 2021 developer FAQ said co-op was not feasible for the initial release, so players should not buy it expecting multiplayer.
What do the reviews say?
Critic and player aggregates tell different stories and should not be read as directly comparable ratings. Metacritic’s page, accessed in 2026, listed a critic Metascore of 56 from 16 reviews, categorized as “Mixed or Average,” and a user score of 6.9 from 89 ratings. In a Steam search-result snapshot accessed in 2026, English-language user reviews were “Very Positive,” with about 92% positive across 11,198 displayed reviews. Steam’s percentage and review count change over time; they are not a fixed score.

- Upgrade your train to fit your needs: Go looting or complete missions to find "Scraps", which can be used to turn your train into a death machine on wheels.
- Get help from the townspeople: Help out the settlers in return for high powered weapons, and other items vital to Charles' destruction.
- Fight Charles to the death: Complete the main questline, and summon Charles to a mortal duel. If you’ve gained enough strength, firepower, and skill, Charles may finally meet his match.

The figures describe different audiences, sample sizes, and scoring systems. Metacritic’s critic aggregate reflects a relatively small set of professional reviews; Steam’s label summarizes customer reviews in English and can shift as new reviews arrive.
What critics praised
The concept and its unusual combination of train travel and horror drew praise. GameSpace’s December 16, 2022 review, quoted on Metacritic, called it “a fun, and original concept” while saying it was “stretched so thinly.” Vgames, in a December 24, 2022 review excerpt, noted that the game offers an open world to explore even if it is not heavy on jump scares. The developer’s itch.io page also reproduces brief publication-attributed reactions: TIME called the trailer “oddly compelling,” PC Gamer described a “very bad train” and a machine gun, and Eurogamer quipped that trains “shouldn’t do this sort of thing.” Those lines capture the premise’s appeal, not a guarantee that every part of the game works equally well.

What critics found less successful
The negative side of the critical response concerns execution and depth. The Metacritic excerpts describe rough edges, mechanics that do not always fit together, lifeless non-player characters, and an island that can feel empty. GameSpace’s “stretched so thinly” assessment points to the central trade-off: a striking idea may not provide enough variety or development to satisfy players looking for a consistently rich survival-horror experience.
Is Choo-Choo Charles worth playing?
It is most likely to appeal if the premise itself sounds fun: using an upgradable train to explore an island and fend off a spider-like locomotive. The mixed critic score suggests tempering expectations about polish and depth, while Steam’s more favorable customer snapshot indicates a warmer reception among its English-language reviewers. Neither aggregate predicts an individual player’s reaction.

- Consider it if: you want a distinctive horror premise, open-world exploration, missions, and a train-upgrade loop.
- Be cautious if: you need dense world-building, consistently lively characters, or substantial mechanical depth; those are among the areas critics questioned.
- Check the content description: the developer warns of blood, gore, and people being eaten alive by a spider train.
Platforms and release dates
The game launched on Steam on December 9, 2022. Developer announcements gave console release dates of December 21, 2023, for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, followed by January 18, 2024, for Nintendo Switch. Steam and itch.io list PC versions. Store availability can vary by region, so check the relevant storefront for the current local listing.

Steam also states that its client has required Windows 10 or later since January 1, 2024. That is a Steam client requirement, separate from the game’s listed Windows 7 minimum; a Windows 7 system may meet the game’s stated minimum but cannot meet the client’s current operating-system requirement.
