If your Xbox storage is full and you can’t download a Game Pass game, free space by uninstalling games you’re not playing or move titles to external storage. For Series X|S games you want to play directly from expanded storage, a compatible Xbox Storage Expansion Card is the clearest option; a USB external drive is useful for archiving and transferring games, but it cannot directly run every optimized title.

Free up space for a Game Pass download

Game Pass downloads use your console’s game storage; there is no separate Game Pass-only storage-management procedure. Start by reviewing installed games and apps, then remove a title you’re finished with or do not currently want installed. Xbox’s Manage storage on your Xbox console page is the official starting point.

Menu labels and steps can vary with console software, so use the storage-management options shown on your Xbox rather than relying on an outdated button sequence. If you later want a removed game again, Xbox Support has guidance on uninstalling and reinstalling a game.

Choose where to keep games you aren’t playing

The right storage choice depends on whether you want games ready to launch from that device or are happy to move them back when you want to play. Xbox Wire’s 2020 storage explainer describes installing to an expansion card, playing from it, and moving or copying games between local and external storage. Microsoft’s current Series S specifications list support for both an Xbox Storage Expansion Card and a USB 3.1 external HDD; check current product compatibility before buying hardware.

Compatible Xbox Storage Expansion Card Adding space for games you want installed and ready Xbox Wire says games can be installed to and played directly from the card.
USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD Keeping a larger library archived or moving games off internal storage Not for every Series X|S optimized game. Treat it as an archive or transfer option unless the specific game and setup support direct play.

When an Expansion Card makes sense

Choose a compatible Xbox Storage Expansion Card if you want more playable storage for Series X|S titles without routinely moving them back to internal storage. Xbox Wire says players can choose to install games to the card by default, play games directly from it, and move or copy games between local and external storage. See Xbox’s Storage Expansion Card guidance and verify the card’s compatibility with your console before purchase.

Microsoft’s Series S specifications list support for 1TB Storage Expansion Cards. That is a listed compatibility specification for the page, not evidence that only 1TB cards exist. Xbox Wire’s detailed explanation dates to 2020, so check current models and capacities rather than assuming every detail or product listing remains unchanged.

When a USB external drive makes sense

A USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD can help you keep games stored outside the console’s internal drive and transfer them when needed. Xbox Wire describes USB storage as a way to store next-generation games for quick transfer and play on Series X|S, but that does not mean every Series X|S optimized title can be launched directly from a USB drive. If direct play from expanded storage matters, use a compatible Storage Expansion Card; otherwise, USB storage can serve as an archive so you do not have to download a game again when you want to move it back.

A simple decision rule

  • Need room now and do not want to buy anything? Uninstall games you are not currently playing.
  • Want Series X|S games ready to play from added storage? Choose a compatible Storage Expansion Card.
  • Want inexpensive extra room for a library you can move between devices? Consider a USB 3.1 external drive, and expect some optimized games to require moving before play.
