How to Build a Strong Party in Baldur’s Gate 3

A strong BG3 party is about covering durability, damage, control, support, and useful skills—not following one mandatory lineup. Build around your protagonist and difficulty, then adjust as you learn.

A strong Baldur’s Gate 3 party is a flexible four-character team that can survive pressure, deal reliable damage, disrupt dangerous enemies, and handle the game’s social and exploration challenges. There is no single best lineup: start with your difficulty and player character, then choose companions and builds to fill the gaps.

What a strong party needs

Think in capabilities, not mandatory class slots. The following jobs are useful coverage, but one character can handle more than one, and a party can succeed with different combinations. These are practical guidelines, not a developer-prescribed formula.

  • Durability: Someone who can stay in danger, draw pressure, or otherwise keep fragile allies from being overwhelmed.
  • Reliable damage: A way to keep hurting enemies across multiple rounds, rather than relying only on a single burst of damage.
  • Battlefield control: Spells or abilities that disable, disrupt, or manage groups of enemies can reduce the pressure on the whole party.
  • Flexible support: Defensive or restorative tools help the group recover from bad turns. Healing is useful, but should not be treated as a way to out-heal incoming combat damage.
  • Skills and utility: Dialogue checks, locks, traps, and other exploration challenges matter outside combat. Consider who can handle these tasks before you lock in a lineup.

Party composition also affects which companion scenes and quest interactions you experience. Bring the characters you want for the story, and swap companions when a particular quest or preference calls for it.

Choose a setup that fits your difficulty and run

Before assigning roles, decide what kind of campaign you want. The game offers Explorer, Balanced, Tactician, Honour, and Custom difficulty modes; they do not all reward the same degree of build planning. The BG3 Wiki’s difficulty overview describes the modes and their differences.

#1 Best Overall
Baldur's Gate 3 - For Playstation 5 (Japan Import) (Multi Language)
  • Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
  • Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
  • Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
  • Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
  • Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
  • Explorer: A more forgiving option, with reduced enemy health. Multiclassing is unavailable in this mode, so plan around single-class progression.
  • Balanced: A general-purpose setting for a standard playthrough. A straightforward mix of durability, damage, control, and utility is a sensible starting point.
  • Tactician: Enemies are tougher and more aggressive, making defensive coverage and a way to control threats more valuable.
  • Honour: Adds legendary boss actions and makes the campaign a single-save run. Treat survival and reliable execution as higher priorities than experimenting with a fragile or complicated build.
  • Custom: Lets you tailor the experience. Choose party priorities to match the settings you select rather than assuming one standard difficulty profile.

These distinctions are about how forgiving a build can be, not a requirement to use one specific class. A player who enjoys companion stories, multiplayer coordination, or a more tactical challenge may also prefer a different roster than someone seeking a relaxed first run.

Build around your player character

Your protagonist is the natural anchor for party planning. If they are already strong in dialogue, you may not need another character focused on social skills. If they are not, consider assigning social checks to a companion. Apply the same logic to locks, traps, and other exploration needs: add coverage where it is missing rather than automatically reserving a slot for a dedicated specialist.

  • Immersive RPG Experience: Dive into the highly-anticipated Baldur's Gate 3, a captivating role-playing game set in the iconic Dungeons & Dragons universe.
  • Deluxe Edition: This premium edition includes the base game, exclusive stickers, and an official soundtrack to enhance your adventure.
  • Epic Storytelling: Embark on an epic journey filled with complex narratives, challenging quests, and memorable characters.
  • Tactical Combat: Engage in strategic, turn-based battles that require careful planning and execution of your party's abilities.
  • Customizable Characters: Create and customize your own unique heroes, shaping their appearances, abilities, and personalities to fit your playstyle.

Then look at the combat jobs your character can cover. A character may contribute damage while also controlling enemies, or combine frontline presence with support. The goal is a team with enough breadth to handle common problems, not four characters that each perform only one narrow job.

Keep class progression understandable at first

For a first playthrough, single-class builds are an easy way to learn what each character gains as they level. Multiclassing is optional, and it adds decisions: class features and feats depend on levels in each specific class, so taking levels elsewhere can delay a milestone in the original class.

Larian advised that players have D&D experience to fully leverage multiclassing in Community Update #21. That advice concerns multiclassing, not party-building as a whole. Consider a multiclass only when you understand the intended payoff and are comfortable with the features you may postpone. Advanced build guides can offer ideas, but versatile multiclass builds are not universal prescriptions.

You are not locked into an early build choice. Larian says an NPC available early in Act 1 can reset a character from level 1, including class, attributes, spells, and cantrips. If a role is not working, respec and try a clearer fit rather than treating the initial choice as permanent.

Use companions and subclasses for variety, not a fixed template

The default maximum party size is four, according to Larian’s modding documentation. With the protagonist occupying one active slot, the remaining places are a limited roster: choose companions who add useful capabilities, support the kind of story scenes you want, or both.

Patch 8 expanded subclass options with 12 new subclasses, one for each class. The additions are Path of the Giant Barbarian, College of Glamour Bard, Death Domain Cleric, Circle of Stars Druid, Arcane Archer Fighter, Way of the Drunken Master Monk, Oath of the Crown Paladin, Swarmkeeper Ranger, Swashbuckler Rogue, Shadow Magic Sorcerer, Hexblade Warlock, and Bladesinging Wizard. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement describes the update. These choices widen the ways to build characters; they do not establish a compulsory party arrangement.

A practical party-building sequence

  1. Set your priorities. Choose your difficulty and decide whether the run emphasizes a relaxed pace, tactical challenge, Honour survival, companion stories, or multiplayer.
  2. List what your protagonist already brings. Note combat strengths, dialogue skills, and exploration utility so you do not add redundant coverage by default.
  3. Fill the biggest gaps first. Look for durability, steady damage, control, and defensive or restorative support across the whole party. Let a character cover multiple jobs when it makes sense.
  4. Check noncombat coverage. Make sure the active group has useful skills for the checks and exploration challenges you care about; companions can be swapped when a quest calls for a different story presence.
  5. Start with builds you can follow. Use single-class progression until you know what you want from a multiclass combination. Avoid delaying a key class feature without a clear reason.
  6. Reassess after leveling or changing difficulty. If someone no longer fits the party’s needs, change the roster or respec the character rather than persevering with a build that is not working.

How to compare possible lineups

When choosing between two plausible teams, compare them on the trade-offs that will affect your run:

  • Ease versus complexity: A lineup of straightforward single-class builds is easier to learn; a multiclass-heavy setup asks you to understand level breakpoints and delayed features.
  • Durability and recovery versus burst: A team built to withstand setbacks may feel safer, while one focused on quick damage may be less forgiving if a fight goes badly.
  • Control and area coverage versus single-target focus: Consider whether you need tools for groups of enemies or prefer concentrating damage on individual threats.
  • Skills and dialogue: Look at the checks your protagonist and companions can cover, not just their combat roles.
  • Difficulty: Tactician and Honour place more weight on managing enemy pressure and surviving dangerous turns than a more forgiving run.
  • Role and equipment overlap: Two characters competing for similar jobs or equipment may be less useful together than characters who complement one another.

The best lineup is the one that covers the problems your run is likely to present while remaining enjoyable to play. Change it as you learn what your party does well and where it struggles.
