Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA Soulslike is not defined by one mechanic or a universal checklist. The label usually fits games that combine deliberate, learnable combat with meaningful consequences for failure, dangerous exploration, and progression that rewards improving your understanding or skills. Difficulty, stamina, dodge rolls, or a death penalty on their own are not enough.
What does “Soulslike” mean?
“Soulslike” is a family resemblance: several design choices work together to create a particular kind of challenge and discovery. Developers interviewed by GamesRadar emphasize qualities such as deliberate action, risk and reward, exploration, learning, and a sense of struggle or mystery. They do not agree on one rule that every game must follow.
A useful way to apply the label is to ask whether a game makes its challenges legible enough to learn, makes failure matter, and connects combat to exploration and progression. This is a practical description, not an official test. When comparing games, it is more informative to name the specific shared traits than to rely on the label alone.
What makes Soulslike combat different?
Actions involve observation and commitment
In many Soulslikes, combat rewards watching an enemy, choosing an opening, and committing to an attack or defense at the right time. Stamina limits, attack recovery, and enemy timing can make reckless action costly. These are recurring design signals, not mandatory ingredients: a game can create deliberate combat through other systems.

The point is not simply to make a fight slow or difficult. Players are expected to notice patterns, make decisions, and adjust after mistakes rather than rely on repeated blind aggression. As GamesRadar’s developer interviews suggest, the tension between risk and reward is part of what makes a decision feel consequential.
Sekiro changes the combat rhythm
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice shows why the genre should not be reduced to stamina management or a standard character-build system. Its combat emphasizes posture pressure and deflections, encouraging players to stay engaged with an opponent instead of relying only on hit-and-run attacks or passive blocking. An Xbox Wire interview also describes its RPG progression as leaning more on tools and abilities than on character stats.

How do checkpoints and death work?
Checkpoints make a dangerous route repeatable and give failure a structure. The exact loop differs from game to game: a checkpoint may affect enemy placement, the safety of carried resources, or how much ground a player must cover to retry a challenge. There is no single Soulslike rule for what resets or what a player loses.
Sekiro is a clear example of why those details should be tied to a specific game. The Xbox Wire interview distinguishes its rules from the recoverable corpse-run system found in earlier FromSoftware titles: an unrecovered death in Sekiro can cost half the money on hand and half the progress toward the next skill point. The game also has a resurrection mechanic with its own limits and costs. These are Sekiro-specific systems, not genre-wide conventions.

Failure can also provide information for the next attempt. In a June 24, 2024 interview with Game Informer, FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki described the intended result: “When players are killed, and they can understand why they were killed in an instance, and it feels justified – ‘Okay, yeah, that makes sense’ – that’s the game design we’re trying to achieve.” The goal is not that every death feels pleasant; it is that players can understand what happened and use that knowledge.
How do exploration and progression fit together?
Routes and secrets reward attention
In many Souls games, exploring is part of progression rather than a break from it. Branching routes, shortcuts, hidden items, and optional areas can reward players who look closely and learn how spaces connect. Bandai Namco’s overview describes earlier Souls levels as interconnected paths where exploration and puzzle solving can uncover items or areas, with bosses acting as tests of combat fluency.

Progression can offer different ways through a challenge
Elden Ring expands that structure into an open world. Rather than requiring players to tackle every obstacle in one fixed sequence, it gives them choices about where to go and how to strengthen a character when blocked. That freedom does not make every major area easy or optional; significant challenges still ask players to develop their skills or build. In a PlayStation.Blog interview, Miyazaki described balancing exploration, boss fights, progression order, and player freedom across the map as a central design challenge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a game a Soulslike just because it is hard?
No. Difficulty by itself says little about whether a game belongs to this design family. A hard game might not connect failure to learning, exploration, or progression in the ways associated with Soulslikes. Likewise, a stamina bar, dodge roll, or penalty on death does not settle the question in isolation.

Look for a cluster of traits that reinforce one another: deliberate combat, meaningful consequences for failure, exploration through dangerous spaces, and progression that rewards improved play or better understanding. Atmosphere and mystery can contribute to the overall resemblance, but no one element acts as a pass-or-fail requirement.
How should you compare two Soulslikes?
When two games share the label, compare the systems that shape the experience instead of assuming they work alike.
- Combat rhythm: Does the game emphasize stamina and recovery, posture and deflection, or another kind of pressure?
- Death cost: Can lost resources be recovered, are they lost outright, or does the game use a different resurrection or recovery system?
- Checkpoint loop: How do safe rests, repeated encounters, shortcuts, and route discovery shape retries?
- Progression freedom: Is the route mostly fixed, or can you leave a difficult encounter and improve elsewhere?
- Character development: Does progress mainly involve stats and builds, or tools, abilities, and configurable weapons?
Lies of P, for example, discusses Soulslike combat while highlighting weapon assembly and playstyle variety. That makes it a useful reminder that games can share a broad design lineage while emphasizing different ways to develop a character or approach a fight. See the game’s official site for its own overview.
