Majora’s Mask makes exploration happen inside a continuously advancing three-day cycle; The Blood of Dawnwalker treats time as a resource spent on quests and selected actions. In the latter, official descriptions say you can roam and observe without advancing the day. The difference is structural: one asks you to plan around a recurring clock and reset, while the other asks you to choose which time-costing opportunities to pursue.
How does Majora’s Mask’s three-day time limit work?
In the Nintendo 64 version described by Nintendo’s manual, time advances continuously except during conversations and while the game is paused. The cycle lasts three in-game days—72 in-game hours—and the manual warns that the game ends if those hours pass without using the Song of Time or Ocarina of Time. That makes ordinary movement and exploration part of the scheduling problem: time passes while Link travels, and recurring events give the player reasons to decide where to go and when.
The clock is not only a countdown to avoid. Nintendo’s interview about the game’s design describes controlling time and repeating the days as part of completing the adventure. The cycle gives exploration a rhythm: learn what happens, act within the available window, then use what you learned on another pass.
What progress carries over when you play the Song of Time?
Playing the Song of Time sends Link through a time vortex back to 6:00 a.m. on the first day. The reset is selective rather than a clean restart. Nintendo’s Nintendo 64 manual lists several things that remain, including masks, songs and items shown on the Quest Status Screen, notebook notes, maps, dungeon maps and compasses, and deposited rupees. Other progress is lost, including cleared maze puzzles, sub-events, conversations, keys, stray fairies and rupees Link is carrying.

This split matters for exploration. A reset can preserve discoveries and tools that help on a later run, while unsaved activity and carried resources still give the current cycle stakes. The player is not expected to finish every task in one uninterrupted stretch; learning the schedule and choosing what to carry forward are part of progression.
Does exploration advance time in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
According to the game’s official descriptions, free roaming and observation do not advance the day. Bandai Namco’s feature on the time-driven quest system says, “To move time forward, you will have to choose.” Creative Director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz describes the intended effect as freedom to explore without pressure while roaming the open world. That is a different trigger from Majora’s Mask: looking around is not itself described as spending time.

Time is instead spent by taking quests and certain selected actions. The official gameplay recap also gives a concrete example: while the player investigated a burning house in real time, in-world time did not move. That distinction lets the player inspect a situation before committing to an action that advances the clock.
How does the 30-day limit work?
Bandai Namco’s gameplay reveal recap says Coen has 30 days to prevent his family’s execution. The time limit therefore frames decisions around which quests and actions are worth taking, rather than requiring the player to complete every activity before a continuously ticking clock expires.

A separate PlayStation Blog feature by Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe says quests can be completed in different orders, skipped or left undiscovered. PlayStation’s April 28, 2026 article identifies visible time costs for some side quests, dialogue choices and skill learning. Those costs make opportunity—not the act of walking or looking—the central pressure. The cited developer accounts describe consequences and a story that continues after time runs out, rather than an automatic game over; treat that as the developers’ description of the design, not independent player testing.

The Blood of Dawnwalker separates observation from commitment, so exploration can precede the choice to spend time. These are different design approaches, not evidence that one is inherently less stressful or better; the cited sources describe intended mechanics, not measured player reactions.

Which versions and release details do the sources cover?
Nintendo’s manual is for the Nintendo 64 game, and Nintendo’s game page identifies the Nintendo 3DS version separately; the reset and persistence details above are drawn from the N64 manual rather than assumed to cover every version. Nintendo’s game page provides that platform context.
The U.S. PlayStation Store listing lists The Blood of Dawnwalker for PS5 with a September 3, 2026 release date. The mechanics discussed here are based on official pre-release descriptions; those descriptions should not be mistaken for an independent assessment of how the finished game feels to play.
