What you get with PC Game Pass
PC Game Pass is a recurring subscription for access to a changing PC game catalog. Xbox describes the plan as including 300+ PC games, day-one releases and EA Play, but the exact selection and benefits can change. Access depends on both an active subscription and the game remaining in the library. If you cancel or a title leaves the service, you can no longer play it through Game Pass unless you obtain access another way. How the costs compare
Use the current local price and your own play plan. The US Xbox Store listed PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month when checked on October 7, 2026; that is a US listing, not a global price, and local prices, promotions and taxes may differ. For a fair comparison, write down the particular games you expect to play and the likely subscription duration. Compare the subscription total with those games’ current prices, adjusting only for discounts that actually apply. Then weigh whether you value included benefits and can accept losing catalog access. Prices and catalogs can change, so a calculation made today may not hold later.
When a subscription is the better fit
- You expect to play several games that are currently in the PC catalog, rather than subscribing for one title and leaving it mostly unused.
- You value the included EA Play access or day-one releases advertised for the plan.
- You are comfortable with recurring billing and with games potentially leaving the catalog.
When buying games individually is the better fit
- You have a short list of specific games, particularly titles that are not in the current catalog.
- You expect to return to those games after the months you would otherwise pay for a subscription.
- You want to choose the store, edition and sale price for each purchase, and accept that each store’s license terms govern continued access.
A digital purchase should not be described as unrestricted ownership. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement states, “The Content and Services are licensed, not sold.” That is Steam’s contract language; check the applicable terms for any other storefront rather than assuming they are identical. Account for billing, refunds and access terms
PC Game Pass billing and refund limitation
Xbox says the subscription renews automatically unless canceled. Its stated refund right for a recent recurring charge applies if you cancel within 30 days after payment because you failed to turn off recurring billing. It is limited to one use per Microsoft account per subscription product, so it is not a general trial or an unlimited refund policy. Review the current terms before subscribing. Store-specific purchase refunds
Steam’s general refund policy allows a request for a game within 14 days of purchase and under two hours of playtime, subject to the policy’s terms and exceptions. Check your PC before choosing
The Xbox PC app baseline is Windows 10 or 11, version 22H2 or higher. Individual games can require more, so verify each title’s system requirements before subscribing for it or buying it. - Estimate how many months you would keep Game Pass active; multiply that by the current local monthly price.
- Price the same games individually, including the editions and DLC you actually want, current sales, and any eligible member discount.
