MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 4v4 tag-team fighter, so you can add assists and character switches once the basic controls feel familiar. The PlayStation beginner guide was published July 20, 2026, ahead of that month’s Open Beta; its beta dates are past, but it remains a useful official guide to the mechanics.
Begin with Startup Battle
Startup Battle provides the game’s onboarding in two parts:

- Basics teaches fundamentals with one character.
- Assemble introduces team mechanics and cooperative actions.
If you already know fighting-game fundamentals, the official guide says you can skip Basics and begin with Assemble. Otherwise, start with Basics and learn attacks and guarding before adding team actions. The current PlayStation game page also lists Training Mode for practicing inputs and combos without match pressure.
Choose a character you want to play
Check the in-game EASE OF USE stars: more stars indicate an easier character to use. The official beginner guide calls Captain America, Ms. Marvel, and Wolverine beginner-friendly, and describes Iron Man and Spider-Man as relatively easy to learn. Storm and Danger are presented as more advanced choices.
#1 Best Overall
- Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
- Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
- Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
- Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.
Use the rating as a starting point, not a rule. The guide recommends beginning with a favorite and expanding your roster gradually. For team composition, one suggested approach is pairing a close-range specialist with a long-range one; experimentation matters more than following a fixed formula.
Learn the attack buttons and starter strings
The official examples use PlayStation button notation:

| Attack | PlayStation button | Starter example | What the guide says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light (L) | □ | L→L→L→L | Chains into a Skill and can trigger a Break. |
| Medium (M) | △ | M→M→M | Leads into a powerful Super Skill. |
| Heavy (H) | ○ | H→H→H | Leads into an Ultimate Skill. |
These strings are introductory examples, not universal optimal combos. Repeat one in Startup Battle or Training Mode to learn its timing; a completed string is a starting point, not a full game plan. PC players should check the button bindings shown in-game rather than assume the PlayStation symbols map directly to their setup.
Choose Quick Skills or motion inputs
Quick Skills are a practical default while learning: each executes a Skill with one button press. Command Inputs use traditional motion inputs and, according to PlayStation’s combat information, provide slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge.
Rank #3
- Assemble your dream team of legendary Marvel characters in a brand new 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
- Choose from an expanding roster of 20 iconic characters at launch, each reimagined in a bold, anime-inspired art style.
- Experiment with team compositions to unlock new combos, synergies and strategies across dynamic, Marvel Universe-inspired stages.
- Play locally against a friend or dive into online lobbies and ranked matchmaking with full cross-play support against the PC version.
- Explore an original story in the single player Episode Mode, diving deeper into the lore behind each team.
| Input option | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Skills | One button press executes a Skill. | Simpler execution for learning. |
| Command Inputs | Traditional motion inputs execute Skills. | More demanding execution; slightly higher damage and more Skill Gauge, as stated by PlayStation. |
Start with Quick Skills to focus on movement, attacks, and defense. Try Command Inputs when you are ready to add motion execution. The Quick Skill button can be customized in settings.
Guard before using defensive techniques
Standing and crouching guard
Hold ← to guard while standing and ↙ to guard while crouching. Make these basic inputs familiar before adding the two featured defensive actions.

Assemble Counter
Press □+× while not guarding. Your character backsteps and automatically counterattacks if the opponent attacks during the maneuver. It is a timed defensive option, not a replacement for learning to guard.
Crossover
Press □+× while guarding. Crossover calls in a teammate to interrupt the opponent and create an opening. The same buttons have different uses depending on whether you are guarding, so practice each situation separately.
Best Value
- GRAPHYC STYLE: The game combines Marvel's iconic characters with a distinctive anime-stylized visual presentation. The colourful and unique graphics offer a new experience for both anime and Marvel fans, making the game stand out in comparison to other titles within the same genre.
- STRATEGIC GAME: Focusing on 4v4 battles, the game offers in-depth tactical mechanics. Players must use the unique abilities and synergies of their heroes to outlast opponents, which require both strategic thinking and quick decision making to succeed on the battlefield.
- VERSATILE OF CHARACTERISTICS: A wide selection of Marvel legendary characters are available, giving gamers freedom to pick their favourite heroes and villains. Each character has their own unique abilities and playing styles, which offer variety and customization in each game.
- STORY MODE: The game includes a full voice-acting story mode available in 10 different languages. This brings a deeper and more engaging experience, where gamers can enjoy a rich and multi-faceted story with their favorite characters.
- MULTIPLE AVAILABILITY: By offering the story mode in ten different languages, the game has a wide international appeal. This makes it more accessible to a global audience and allows more players to enjoy the game's story and characters in their native language.
Add teammates one action at a time
- Call an assist: press × for an Assemble Assist.
- Switch characters: press L2 with a direction. Neutral or → selects the second teammate, ↓ the third, and ← the fourth.
- Follow an assist: after an assist, watch for the “Switch?” prompt. It marks a brief opportunity to press L2 and switch.
Get comfortable calling a single assist before attempting assist-to-switch techniques. In a 4v4 tag-team game, team actions add options, but learning one reliable input at a time makes them easier to recognize and use.
Practice a short beginner sequence
- Run Startup Battle Basics and learn Light, Medium, Heavy, standing guard, and crouching guard.
- Repeat one basic Link Attack until its timing feels familiar.
- Practice guarding, then try Assemble Counter while not guarding and Crossover while guarding.
- Add one Assemble Assist. Once it feels reliable, look for the “Switch?” prompt and practice the L2 switch.
- Use Training Mode to repeat the sequence, create a custom bot, and adjust CPU settings.
Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine advises: “Don’t worry about mastering everything right away.”
Controller and online-play notes
The official US PlayStation FAQ says PS5 players can use any PS5-compatible arcade stick or leverless controller, and can customize button inputs from Character Select or the mid-match Pause Menu. These are optional input styles, not requirements or verified performance upgrades. That FAQ does not establish compatibility for a specific PC peripheral. For online play on PC, consult the official PlayStation support FAQ for how to create and link a PlayStation Account.
