When you run out of ammo with a heavy ARC still threatening you, stop trying to win a damage race. Break line of sight, get behind hard cover, and make a deliberate route to extraction. There is no reliably established no-ammo kill method for the heaviest enemies; surviving and disengaging is the safer play.
What to do immediately when your ammo is gone
- Break line of sight. Move behind a solid wall, building, large object, or corner. Open ground leaves you exposed and gives you fewer chances to recover stamina.
- Choose a route before you move. Identify cover between you and an exit, then move from one protected position to the next rather than sprinting blindly.
- Manage stamina for the dangerous stretch. Sprint only where you need the speed. The Epic Games Store survival guide says sprinting drains stamina quickly, while standing, walking, and crouching gradually restore it. Holstering a weapon makes you run faster; sliding after a sprint does not expend stamina. Epic Games Store’s ARC Raiders survival guide covers these movement mechanics.
- Use healing or shield items only when you have a safe moment. Bandages restore health over time and shield rechargers restore shield energy, but using them while exposed can leave you vulnerable. If a teammate is down, the guide says they can be revived by holding the interaction button or using a Defibrillator.
- Account for extraction noise. Regular extraction controls make a loud sound that can attract ARC and human enemies. Approach under cover and be ready to move after activating them. Raider Hatches require a key, so they are only an option if you have one.
Use cover according to the enemy
Cover is not interchangeable: choose a position that interrupts the threat the particular ARC presents. GameSpot’s enemy guide provides these examples; they are enemy-specific tactics, not guarantees that you can escape every encounter.
- Rocketeer: Get inside a building or other substantial cover. Its rockets have splash damage, so a thin obstacle or exposed position may not protect you.
- Leaper: A doorway can limit the space it has to leap, giving you a more controlled position from which to break away.
- Bastion: Use a large object or corner to block its machine-gun bursts, then reposition while it is not firing. Avoid crossing open ground if you can take a covered route instead.
These examples are based on GameSpot’s ARC Raiders enemy guide. Its weak-point advice—such as targeting a Rocketeer’s thrusters or a Bastion’s leg joints and rear canister—applies when you have suitable ammunition. It is not a substitute for ammunition when your goal is escape.
Why shooting armor without the right ammo is a bad escape plan
The Epic Games Store guide advises considering ARC Armor Penetration before choosing to engage. It identifies Ferro and Hullcracker as useful against machines, while Kettle, Stitcher, and Bobcat are more difficult choices. If the ammunition that can meaningfully damage your target is gone, spending time firing at its armor is not a dependable way to create an opening. Disengaging is a tactical recommendation based on that matchup guidance, not a quoted developer rule.

The game allows you to equip up to two weapons, but a second weapon only helps if you have ammunition for it and its penetration suits the target. A spare weapon with no useful rounds does not turn an empty-ammo encounter into a reliable fight.

Prepare for the next run
- Check penetration against the enemies you expect to face. Do not judge a loadout only by weapon count; consider whether its ammunition can deal with ARC armor.
- Keep ammunition availability in mind. A weapon is only a practical answer while you have the rounds to use it.
- Notice cover and stamina recovery points as you travel. Buildings, corners, and pauses out of sight can make a retreat more manageable.
- Locate extraction before you need it. The survival guide recommends knowing exit locations in advance. Factor in the noise from regular extraction controls, and remember that Raider Hatches need a key.
