To have a Steam game ready for a playtest, check its current install and the free space in your Steam libraries, move or install it to a suitable drive, then schedule and prioritize its downloads early. Test-launch the game before the session: if an update is waiting, launching can start it immediately. Steam’s Download Manager and storage settings give you the controls to prepare without letting a last-minute update or download disrupt the test.
Check the game’s install and available storage
In Steam, open Settings > Storage to see the library locations and games on each drive. Check that the target game is installed in a library with room for its current files and any likely update. Steam does not set a universal free-space buffer; use the game’s displayed requirements and leave reasonable headroom for updates based on the game and your system.
If the current library is short on space, use an existing library on another drive or add a library folder through the Storage settings. Steam supports multiple library folders across drives, and new installations can be directed to an existing library. For a game already installed, select its source drive and the game in Settings > Storage, then choose Move. Another documented route is Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder. Labels can vary as the client changes. Moving an installed game between libraries does not require downloading the game again. See Steam Support’s instructions for moving a Steam installation and games.
When choosing a drive, consider capacity, compatibility with your computer’s form factor and interface, and the performance needed for the game. Steam supports libraries on multiple drives but does not endorse a particular model or guarantee that a given drive will work with every computer. Steam specifically advises against installing the Steam client itself on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues. Check your computer’s compatibility before buying or connecting additional storage.

Stage and prioritize downloads before the test
Open Steam’s Downloads page from the client link or through View > Downloads. The Download Manager shows progress, queue order, and completed updates; you can reorder queued work so the playtest game finishes before less urgent downloads. For a fixed test date, plan around the available time and competing network use:

- Several downloads are queued: move the playtest game or update ahead of lower-priority items.
- Other people or applications need the connection: set a download bandwidth limit in Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Updates should run only during certain hours: set an automatic update schedule in the Downloads settings, if the option is available in your client.
- The game’s update is urgent: use its per-game update settings to give automatic updates high priority.
Per-game update options are under Library > right-click the game > Properties > Updates. The option Only update this game when I launch it can defer an update, but it is risky for a scheduled playtest: Steam may begin the pending update when you launch the game. Set aside time to apply it and verify the build before the session rather than making the first launch part of the test.
Estimate download time without confusing the units
Steam’s download rate is shown in bytes per second, while internet plans are commonly advertised in bits per second. Because one byte equals eight bits, the numbers are not directly comparable. Steam Support gives the example that 768 KB/s equals 6,144 Kb/s, or 6 megabits per second. Check the units before deciding that a download is unusually slow.

A reliable finish-time estimate also depends on the game’s download size, Steam’s delivery capacity, the connection, other network activity, and local installation work. Without the specific game, connection, and PC, there is no meaningful universal completion time. Start early enough to allow for those variables, then check the Download Manager rather than relying on a single speed reading.
Keep downloads from interfering with the playtest
Steam automatically pauses downloads when a game launches to prioritize the game’s network activity. If you need downloads to continue during play, enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay in Steam > Settings > Downloads. Steam recommends considering a bandwidth limit if downloading affects gameplay network performance. For a playtest where network behavior matters, finish downloads before the session so background transfers do not complicate the test.

If a download seems slow, first check the rate units and whether other devices or applications are using the connection. Then confirm the selected Download Region is your region or a nearby one. Steam says trying another nearby region can help when a content-server region is slow or overloaded; it is not a guaranteed speed increase. For an installation or update failure, Steam’s listed options include clearing the download cache, repairing the Library folder, verifying installed files, or trying another drive. Follow the relevant steps in Steam’s update and installation troubleshooting guide. Treat disk or RAM diagnostics as later troubleshooting, not routine preparation for every playtest.
