There is no single parental-control switch for every game or payment. Start with the child’s device and family account to manage console or store purchases and playtime, then check the game publisher’s account settings for game-specific content, chat, and payments. A control only covers the account or billing route it is designed for.
How do I limit my child’s playtime or purchases?
First identify three things: the device your child plays on, the account that owns the game, and the account or store that bills each purchase. A game installed on a console may use the console’s family settings for store purchases but a separate publisher account for in-game chat, content, or publisher-billed payments.
- Device and family account: Use these settings for console access, playtime, and purchases charged through the platform store.
- Game publisher account: Check these settings for the game’s age or content restrictions, social features, and purchases charged by the publisher.
- Payment method: Confirm where the charge appears. A PIN or approval rule on one account does not necessarily cover charges through another store or account.
Epic’s family guidance points parents to platform controls for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Windows, Android, and iOS, while Epic’s own controls apply to Epic account services. The main differences between the covered systems are:

How to set parental controls on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2
Nintendo offers console controls and the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. Depending on the console generation and app setup, parents can manage playtime and restrictions, review gameplay history, and allow selected games to ignore restrictions. A parent or guardian Nintendo Account can also manage eShop restrictions, including spending limits or age-based visibility of content.

- Use Nintendo’s controls for device use, playtime, and eShop restrictions.
- If your child plays Fortnite, Nintendo recommends using Epic Games Parental Controls as well. Nintendo’s controls can allow Fortnite to run while Epic settings manage age-rated experiences and features within the game.
- On Switch 2, GameChat restrictions have separate controls in the app; do not assume a general game restriction also configures GameChat.
Exact options and instructions depend on whether the child uses the original Switch or Switch 2, the app, and the account’s country or region. Check the console generation before following a setup path.
How to set a spending limit on PlayStation
PlayStation spending limits are part of family management and parental controls. Use the current PlayStation family-management settings to manage the child’s access and spending. The available support guide includes a PS5 setup video, so labels and screens may differ by console or software version.

If you change a setting while your child is in a game, PlayStation says the child may need to sign out and sign back in before the change takes effect.
How to require approval before a child buys on Xbox

- Sign in with an organizer account.
- Open Settings > Account > Family settings and choose the child.
- Go to Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download.
- Turn on Ask a parent.
Microsoft also allows approval requirements to be changed from a PC. Organizers can add money to a child’s Microsoft account so purchases draw on that balance, review spending activity, and enable approval for every purchase. Microsoft says approval is needed for purchases above the child’s age limit or when the balance is empty; the organizer can choose the stricter every-purchase setting instead.

Epic’s parental controls cover spending limits, chat restrictions, playtime limits, content filters, and activity reports across Fortnite, Rocket League, Fall Guys, and Epic Games Store. These are separate from console-store controls: an Epic payment PIN does not govern a purchase billed through PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, or Steam.

Epic says that accounts indicating the player is under 13 have a $100 daily limit on purchases made using Epic Games payment. That daily total spans Epic-payment purchases in Fortnite, Rocket League, Fall Guys, and Epic Games Store; a parent or guardian PIN is required to override purchases above the limit. It is not a cap on a child’s total game spending: it excludes platform payments through PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, and Nintendo, as well as purchases made with in-game currency such as V-Bucks. Account and regional applicability should be checked in Epic’s current settings.
Epic also has an Allow Paid Random Items setting for spending V-Bucks or V-Buck-purchased content on random-reward items. Epic says availability varies by region, so the setting may not appear in some locations.

What about Roblox and other games?
Do not assume the controls for one game apply to another. For Roblox, confirm current instructions in Roblox’s official help or account settings before relying on a particular spending limit or allowance; detailed current setup steps are not established here. For any other game, identify the billing account first, then check both the platform family settings and the publisher’s current account-safety controls. Apply the rule at the layer that actually processes the purchase or governs the feature you want to restrict.
