An M.2 expansion adds capacity; it does not guarantee faster loading or higher frame rates. Sony’s current guidance describes storage expansion, not a new universal performance upgrade.
First, identify which upgrade you mean
Sony’s relevant hardware upgrade is an M.2 SSD installed inside the PS5. Compatible drives can store and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. If you only want to free space, an external USB drive is another option, but it works differently: PS5 games stored on it must be copied back to console or M.2 storage before you can play them. Compatible PS4 games can be played directly from external storage. See Sony’s PS5 and PS4 storage solutions.
If you mean a console software update rather than a storage expansion, check it separately under Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. If the console shows Update Available, select Update System Software. Sony instructs users to update system software before installing an M.2 SSD; version availability can change, so use Sony’s PS5 system software support page for current instructions.
Check the SSD against Sony’s compatibility requirements
Look up the exact model’s specifications on the manufacturer’s product page or datasheet. Check the drive with its heatsink or other cooling structure installed—not just the bare SSD. Sony lists these requirements in its M.2 SSD installation and compatibility guide.

Sony says it cannot guarantee that every drive meeting the listed specifications will work. If a listing does not clearly state the interface, dimensions with its heatsink attached, or cooling details, ask the manufacturer or vendor before buying. Sony’s guidance does not certify a drive simply because it meets the speed recommendation.
Understand what the upgrade changes—and what it does not
An installed M.2 drive can be used to store, download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games and media apps. Its purpose is to expand storage, not to promise a general performance boost. Sony cautions: “Not all games are necessarily playable with the exact same performance provided by the PS5 console’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD, even where the M.2 SSD device’s sequential read speed is faster than 5500MB/s.” The 5,500 MB/s figure is a recommended SSD specification, not a measured game-performance result.

If the drive checks out, follow the instructions for your PS5 model
Installation differs between the CFI-1000 and CFI-2000/7000 model groups. Use the model-specific instructions in Sony’s installation guide rather than following a generic sequence. Sony advises working at a well-lit table with a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver; a small flashlight is optional. Touch a grounded metal object first to discharge static, and do not power on or play the console with its cover off.
On first use, the PS5 will show a formatting guide. Formatting erases all data on the M.2 SSD, so save anything you need from that drive before proceeding. If a game has problems when run from M.2 storage, Sony recommends moving it to the console’s internal storage. You can move an SSD between PS5 consoles; to access its data on the new console, sign into the same account on both.
