Before buying a PS5 edition, upgrading a PS4 game, or downloading DLC, check the exact game’s current PlayStation Store listing. Edition names do not guarantee the same contents from one game to another, and a PS4 game running on PS5 is not the same thing as owning its PS5 version. Upgrade eligibility, price, disc requirements, and add-on compatibility all depend on the specific title.
What an edition, an upgrade, and compatibility mean
An edition is the package offered for a particular game. “Standard,” “Deluxe,” and similar labels do not define a universal set of contents: included DLC, bonuses, and upgrade rights vary by title and listing. Check the selected edition’s contents and region-specific terms before buying.

An upgrade is a separate offer that may let an eligible PS4 game owner obtain a digital PS5 version. PlayStation Support says the offer can be free, paid, or time-limited; owning a PS4 edition does not by itself establish that a PS5 upgrade is included. Review the offer on the game’s PS5 hub or current Store listing. PlayStation’s upgrade guidance explains the process and restrictions.
Compatibility is a different question: many PS4 games can run on a PS5 as PS4 games, without an upgrade. That does not turn the purchase into a PS5 edition or guarantee every feature works.

Can you upgrade your PS4 game to PS5?
Some PS4 games have a PS5 upgrade offer, but eligibility and terms are title-specific. PlayStation says an offer may be free, require payment, or be available only for a limited time. An internet connection is required to obtain an eligible digital upgrade. Check the game hub and read the offer before purchasing or assuming a particular edition includes it.
If you own a PS4 disc
- You need a PS5 console with a disc drive. Insert the PS4 disc to download the upgrade, and keep it inserted whenever you play the upgraded digital PS5 game.
- The disc’s country or region must match the region of your PlayStation account, according to PlayStation Support.
- A PS4 disc cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition console.
If you own a digital PS4 game
An eligible digital PS4 game can be upgraded on either PS5 model, subject to that game’s specific offer. Use the account that owns the game and check its PS5 hub for the upgrade option and any cost or deadline.

If you got the game through PlayStation Plus
A PS4 game redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit generally does not qualify for a PS5 upgrade unless the offer explicitly says otherwise. A subscription benefit or catalog access should not be treated as an upgrade entitlement without checking the game’s terms.
Can you play the PS4 version on PS5 without upgrading?
Usually, yes. PlayStation’s current compatibility guidance says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. Some games may have unavailable features, errors, or unexpected behavior, and PlayStation’s list includes a small group marked “Playable on: PS4 only.” Compatibility listings can change, so check the current PS4-to-PS5 compatibility guidance for a particular title.

PlayStation advises trying a PS4 game on the PS5 before buying add-ons for use with it, so you can assess the experience on your console. Its support guidance puts it this way: “Before purchasing add-ons to play with your PS4 games on PS5 consoles, please try to boot and play your PS4 games on your PS5 console to see if you are happy with the play experience.”
How to choose between PS4 and PS5 versions
If you own both versions, you can select which one to download or play from the game’s options in the PS5 Game Library. Confirm the version shown before launching, especially when checking which add-ons or save data apply. The fact that a game appears in your library does not mean that every version or edition is installed.

When comparing a listing or deciding whether to upgrade, verify these details for the exact title:
- Whether the offer is for a PS4 version, a PS5 version, or both.
- Whether your copy is digital or disc-based, and whether the offer applies to that ownership type.
- The upgrade price, if any, and whether the offer has a time limit.
- The exact DLC, bonuses, or other content included in the edition.
- Any account-region and console disc-drive requirements.
- Whether the add-on works with the game version you intend to play.
Where to find and download add-on content
Add-ons are separate from the base game and from the PS4-to-PS5 upgrade offer. On PS5, open the game in your Game Library and look under its Add-Ons section to find purchased content available to download. The PlayStation App also provides a game-specific route to add-ons. Before purchasing DLC, check the listing for the specific game and version you plan to use. Do not assume an add-on for one version or edition is included in another, or that it will work with every PS4 game running through backward compatibility.
What the “99%” compatibility figure means
PlayStation’s current support guidance describes the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games as playable on PS5. A separate PlayStation.Blog FAQ published on November 9, 2020, said more than 99% of those games could be played on either PS5 model at launch. That percentage is historical launch-era context, not a guarantee about every title today; consult the current compatibility guidance for a game-specific answer.
