When a publisher removes Denuvo Anti-Tamper, it changes the game’s build—players usually do not need to cancel or remove a separate license themselves. The game may need an official update to keep working, and other copy protection can remain. Removal alone does not guarantee better performance.
What does “Denuvo removed” mean?
It means the publisher has changed a game build to remove its Denuvo Anti-Tamper integration. It does not necessarily mean that all digital rights management (DRM), anti-tampering measures, or other copy protection have been removed. Each game’s publisher determines what the updated build contains.
For example, KRAFTON said Denuvo had been removed from Hi-Fi RUSH, while a form of copy protection and the game’s own anti-tampering features remained. The publisher described the change in its official Steam announcement and support notice.
Will the game still work, or do you need to update it?
Follow the publisher’s instructions for that specific game. A removal can change the game’s internal structure, so a patch may be required. Do not assume that an older, unpatched build will continue to launch.

Hi-Fi RUSH: a title-specific example
KRAFTON’s notice, updated December 4, 2025, set the end of Denuvo support for the PC version at 00:00 KST on January 16, 2026. It said the game’s structure would change significantly, required PC players to install the latest patch, and warned that the unpatched game would not run after that deadline. The deadline has passed; players should use the official game update channel and install the current build rather than rely on an old copy. This requirement was specific to Hi-Fi RUSH, not a general rule for every game that removes Denuvo.
The Steam announcement called the update Patch 10 and confirmed both that Denuvo was removed and that a form of copy protection remained. Check the game’s official announcement or support page for any patch requirement, cutoff date, or change to launch behavior.

Does removing Denuvo make a game run faster?
Possibly, but removal by itself is no guarantee of higher frame rates, shorter loading times, lower CPU use, or improved stability. The effect depends on how Denuvo was integrated, and an update may change other parts of the game at the same time.
Denuvo/Irdeto’s 2023 Anti-Tamper datasheet says the product has “no perceived impact” on players. That is the vendor’s claim, not an independent performance measurement. Separately, in a 2017 official RiME producer letter, Cody Bradley, Producer for Team Grey Box, described a small performance hit in that game but said the team did not believe it was causing the problems then being reported. His statement was specific to RiME; it was not a benchmark and does not establish what happens in other titles.

The cited sources provide no independent before-and-after performance figure for a removal patch. To assess a particular game, look for a controlled comparison using the same hardware and comparable game versions; a change after a patch cannot automatically be attributed to Denuvo alone.
Will removing Denuvo remove every protection or activation requirement?
No general conclusion follows from removal of Denuvo Anti-Tamper. A title can retain platform DRM, its own anti-tampering measures, or another form of copy protection. Activation and online requirements are also specific to the game and its terms.

For instance, a SEGA end-user license agreement for one Steam product says Denuvo may be installed with that product, may limit installations, may add copy-protection components, and may require an internet connection during installation or first launch. Those terms apply to that product; they do not establish the rules for every Denuvo-protected game or explain what a later publisher patch removes.

No. Use the official update rather than manually deleting files or modifying the game. The SEGA agreement cited above says certain Denuvo files may remain after that product is uninstalled and warns that disabling or tampering with protection may prevent the product from operating properly. That is an uninstall and license-term example—not proof that files remain after every publisher’s removal patch.

What to check for a specific game
- Which protection changed: Look for the publisher’s exact wording. Removal of Denuvo Anti-Tamper does not by itself mean all DRM or copy protection is gone.
- Whether an update is required: Check the official announcement for a mandatory patch, a deadline, or a warning about older builds.
- How launching or activation works: Use the game’s current support information rather than assuming the removal changes platform or online requirements.
- Whether performance changed: Look for a controlled comparison on matched hardware and versions, not just a before-and-after impression following a broader patch.
- Whether other features changed: Check publisher notes for documented effects on saves, multiplayer, or other game features; do not infer them from Denuvo’s removal alone.
