Start at the game publisher’s official website or open the expected platform store yourself. Then compare the listing’s developer or publisher, title, platform, release timing and product details with the publisher’s announcement. Treat unexpected links, installers, login requests and security warnings as reasons to pause and verify—not as hurdles to bypass.
How can I tell if a newly released game is official?
Find the release independently: visit the publisher’s website or navigate directly to the platform’s store, rather than following an unsolicited message, social post, ad or pop-up. Check the publisher’s official announcement for the game’s release date and supported platforms. A link claiming to offer an early-access build, demo or beta deserves extra scrutiny unless the publisher confirms it through an official channel. Steam warns that malware can be disguised as fake demos or betas, pirated software, cheats and gaming utilities (Steam security guidance).
Match the listing against the announcement
Compare the exact game title, named developer and publisher, platform, release timing, screenshots, trailer, description, features and any stated limitations. If important details differ, stop and confirm them through the publisher’s own channel before downloading. Microsoft Store policy requires products and their metadata to represent their source, functionality and features accurately, and prohibits malware in submitted products. That policy governs Microsoft Store submissions; it is not a guarantee that every listing there—or elsewhere—is harmless (Microsoft Store policies).
Check the route and installer
Prefer the platform’s ordinary install or update mechanism. Be wary if a purported game download sends you to an unfamiliar site, asks you to sign in somewhere other than the expected platform, or requires a separate utility, cheat, security exclusion or other unrelated software. Stop and verify the request through the publisher or platform using a route you found independently.

Which signals are not proof of a safe download?
A polished store page, copied artwork, high review count, HTTPS padlock or identity badge cannot by itself prove that a particular download is genuine and safe. Treat these as limited clues, not a substitute for checking the publisher’s own announcement and the download route.
For example, Epic says its brand verification is not an endorsement and does not establish a product’s trustworthiness or safety (Epic brand verification). Store presence and verified identity may help you assess who is behind a listing, but they do not certify the file itself.

What should I do if antivirus warns me?
- Stop the installation. Do not run the file, create an antivirus exclusion or turn protection off just to proceed.
- Check the source and detection. Confirm where the file came from, whether the publisher and listing match, and what your security product actually detected.
- Ask for guidance. Steam notes that false positives occur, but advises users to take detections seriously, report uncertain cases from the store page and consult their antivirus provider (Steam security guidance). Microsoft also recommends downloading from trusted sources and keeping antivirus protection current (Microsoft security guidance).
A false positive is possible; it is not a reason to assume the file is safe. If the publisher or security provider cannot resolve the warning, do not install that copy.

- Nintendo games: Nintendo directs users to Nintendo eShop or Nintendo’s website for its console games, and to Google Play or Apple App Store for its games and applications for smart devices. - Android: Android developer-identity protections began a staged rollout on September 30, 2026 for users installing through participating stores in select regions, with broader rollout planned in 2027. Whether a check applies depends on country and store participation, so consult current Android guidance for your location and device (Android developer verification).
- Microsoft Store: Microsoft Store policy requires accurate product representation and prohibits malware. Version 7.20 was published September 15, 2026, and is scheduled to take effect October 22, 2026; publication does not mean that version is already effective (Microsoft Store policies).
Quick checklist before you download
- Did you find the game through the publisher’s site or the expected platform store, rather than an unsolicited link?
- Do the developer or publisher, title, platform, release timing and product details match the official announcement?
- Does the download use the normal store installation process without asking for unrelated software or unexpected credentials?
- Have you stopped to investigate any security warning instead of disabling protection?
