Yes—if you already plan to buy the game and want the Year 1 pass as a whole. At listed US prices, Digital Deluxe costs $25 more than Standard, while the pass currently costs $34.99 on its own. But if you are buying mainly for one specific DLC fighter, wait: Phoenix Cyclops is the only Year 1 character named in the official sources cited here.
What the Year 1 pass includes
The Year 1 Character and Stage Pass covers four additional playable characters, one additional stage, and battle-result poses for the base roster. Only Phoenix Cyclops is identified by name in the official sources cited here. Takeshi Yamanaka, Producer at Arc System Works, announced him as the first additional Year 1 character in a July 23, 2026 PlayStation Blog post. The other three identities are not established by those sources. If you want the pass for one particular character rather than the roster of four, wait until that fighter is officially named and you can assess their gameplay.
How the US prices compare
The FAQ gives US recommended retail prices for the editions; the PlayStation US Store currently lists the standalone pass at $34.99. Store prices and discounts can change, so check your regional store before buying.

Which edition makes sense for you?
Choose Digital Deluxe if you want the pass
If you are already committed to the game and value the four-character pass, Deluxe is the better bundle at the listed US prices: its $25 premium over Standard is less than the pass’s current $34.99 standalone listing. You also get Howard the Duck and Cosmo lobby items.

Choose Standard if you are unsure about the characters
The identities of three pass characters are not confirmed in the official sources cited here. Standard lets you start with the base game and decide later. If you own the physical PS5 Standard Edition, the official FAQ says you can buy a Digital Deluxe or Ultimate upgrade through the PlayStation Store. [MARVEL Tōkon FAQ]
Choose Ultimate only if you want the cosmetics
Ultimate does not add a larger Year 1 character pass than Digital Deluxe. Its extra $15 buys five additional costumes and chromatic color variations for all 20 launch characters. Choose it when those cosmetics are worth the premium to you, not as a way to get more DLC fighters.

What the base game offers while you wait
PlayStation describes a 20-character launch roster and a 4v4 tag-team fighter with adjustable traditional and quick inputs. The official game page also lists Episode Mode, cross-play, offline play options, and online modes. [PlayStation game page]
Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 review characterizes the game as mechanically deep for experienced fighting-game players, while noting that tutorials and simpler inputs can help newcomers. The confirmed physical release is the PS5 Standard Edition. Its owners can purchase a Digital Deluxe or Ultimate upgrade through the PlayStation Store, according to the official FAQ. The FAQ also says PS5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers work with the game; neither is required to play.
