Some original PlayStation 3 games can be played on PS5 only by streaming them through PlayStation Plus Premium in supported markets; a PS3 disc cannot be played on a PS5. Streaming is a way to access selected original PS3 titles through Sony’s service, not native disc compatibility. A PS4 or PS5 remake or remaster is a separate version that may be downloaded and run on the newer console.
Can you play PS3 games on PS5?
Not from an original PS3 disc. Sony’s backward-compatibility guidance states, “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” PlayStation Support lists that as a platform limitation.
Some original PS3 games are available through PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming in select markets. Availability depends on the title, region and current service catalog; not every PS3 game is offered. Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide describes PS3 games as streaming titles, while its cloud-streaming information covers eligible games and supported regions.
Why does streaming take the place of native PS3 playback?
To run an original PS3 game locally, a PS5 would need to execute the software in a way that reproduces the behavior it expects from PS3 hardware. Sony’s public support and service materials establish the practical distinction—PS3 discs are unsupported, while selected original titles are offered through streaming—but do not give one definitive engineering or business reason for choosing that arrangement.

The PS3 hardware is technically different
Sony’s historical materials identify the Cell processor and RSX graphics processor as components of the PS3 platform: see its Cell overview and PS3 launch announcement. An emulation developer interview discusses the challenges of reproducing PS3 behavior on later, differently structured processors. That is useful technical context, not proof that emulation is impossible or that it alone explains Sony’s service decision.
Three different ways a PS3-era game can appear on PS5
| Route | What happens | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS3 disc | The original disc is inserted and the game would run locally. | Unsupported on PS5, according to Sony’s compatibility guidance. |
| Original PS3 game streamed from the catalog | An eligible title is delivered as a cloud stream through PlayStation Plus Premium. | Requires a supported market and a title currently available to your account. Check the cloud-streaming eligibility information and your local catalog. |
| PS4 or PS5 remake/remaster | A separately released version is downloaded for a later platform. | This is not the original PS3 software running natively. Sony distinguishes downloadable remakes and remasters from original PS3 titles offered for streaming in its PlayStation Plus guide. |
How to check whether a particular game is playable
- Identify the version. Check whether the listing is for the original PS3 release or a PS4/PS5 remake or remaster. The later-platform version is distinct software, even when it has the same title.
- Check your regional PlayStation Store or PlayStation Plus catalog. Look for the exact title and confirm whether it is listed for cloud streaming in your market. Sony’s catalog and streaming eligibility page are the relevant references.
- Confirm the access method and subscription eligibility. A streamed original PS3 game is not a downloadable PS3 disc image; verify that the listing is available with your current plan and account region before relying on access.
What this means for PS3 owners
Owning the PS3 disc does not grant a way to play that disc on PS5. If a game is offered as a stream, access comes through the eligible service listing, not the physical copy. If a remake or remaster exists for PS4 or PS5, that later-platform release is another route, but it is a separate product version. Because catalog availability varies, check the exact title and region rather than assuming that a PS3 game is included.
