First identify which connection is lagging: PS5 Remote Play streams from your own console, while PS Portal cloud streaming streams an eligible game from PlayStation’s service. The right checks and speed guidance differ. For Remote Play, PlayStation lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum and recommends at least 15 Mbps in both directions for best performance. For Portal cloud streaming, check the resolution-specific guidance and network status before changing settings.
Identify the kind of stream

A fast download result alone does not guarantee a responsive stream: upload capacity, stability, Wi-Fi conditions, competing traffic, and—in Remote Play—NAT can also matter. If sign-in or connection trouble appears service-wide, check PlayStation Network status.
Fix lag in PS5 Remote Play
Check the console, app, and account
- Make sure the PS5 is on or in rest mode, the console and Remote Play device can connect to the internet, and both are signed in to the same PlayStation account.
- On PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- If you want to connect while the PS5 is in rest mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Install current PS5 system software and update the Remote Play app on the receiving device. If the app still fails, restart or reinstall it. On PC or Mac, check whether antivirus software is blocking it.
Some games and features are not compatible with Remote Play. If the issue affects a specific game or function rather than the connection generally, check compatibility before treating it as network lag. See PlayStation’s Remote Play troubleshooting guidance.
Check both directions, then reduce network competition
PlayStation’s UK Remote Play guidance lists at least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as the minimum, and recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download for best performance. These are vendor thresholds, not a guarantee of low latency or smooth play. Check speeds on both the PS5 and the receiving device; a result from only one end may miss the weak link.

- Pause downloads and other heavy network activity, then test again when other devices are idle.
- If using Wi-Fi, confirm other devices can use the network and try the 5 GHz band.
- Where practical, test the receiving PC or Mac over Ethernet; if the PS5 is wired, reconnect its LAN cable.
An Ethernet cable can be a useful diagnostic if the receiving computer supports it, but a wired test will not fix every source of lag. Use an adapter only if that device requires one.
Investigate NAT only if connection trouble persists
PlayStation says Remote Play uses UDP port 8572 and warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent a connection. NAT or port settings vary by router and provider; if you are unsure, ask your internet service provider, router manufacturer, or mobile carrier for help rather than changing advanced settings at random.

Fix lag in PS Portal cloud streaming
Confirm the stream is eligible
Portal cloud streaming requires an adult account with an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, a supported country or region, and a game eligible for streaming on Portal. A game appearing in a PlayStation catalog does not by itself mean it can be streamed on Portal. Availability and eligible games vary by region and can change.
Check network quality and lower the resolution if needed
- Update PS Portal system software.
- During a cloud stream, open the Quick Menu and choose Troubleshooting to check network quality or status.
- In the Quick Menu, open Max Resolution. PlayStation’s Canada Portal support guidance says to choose 1080p for a stable connection with a minimum of 13 Mbps, or 720p when the connection is not fast enough or stability is a concern, with a minimum of 7 Mbps.
- After changing the maximum resolution, restart the streaming game for the change to take effect.
PlayStation’s separate US cloud-streaming overview gives a 5 Mbps session minimum and recommends 13 Mbps for 720p, 23 Mbps for 1080p, 38 Mbps for 1440p, and 52 Mbps for 2160p. Those figures come from a different service overview; do not treat them as interchangeable with the Portal-specific 7 Mbps and 13 Mbps support guidance above. Use the current guidance for your device and region.

PlayStation cautions that “Individual game performance will vary based on the specific game being played, and the quality of connectivity in your network environment.” A speed test alone cannot promise a particular resolution, frame rate, or latency. When to escalate
- If Remote Play remains unreliable after checking both devices, reducing network use, testing Wi-Fi versus Ethernet, and updating the app, ask your ISP or router provider about NAT and UDP port 8572.
- If Portal reports unstable network quality, keep the lower resolution cap and retest after other network activity stops; return to a higher cap only when the connection is stable.
- If Portal cloud streaming cannot start despite a working connection, verify Premium membership, adult-account status, region, and the specific game’s Portal streaming eligibility.
