Compatible PS4 digital games can be downloaded from your library; compatible PS4 discs require a PS5 model with a disc drive. A small number of PS4 games are exceptions, and performance or features can vary by title.
Which PlayStation generations work on PS5?
In this context, backward compatibility means playing PS4 games on PS5. Sony says the PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games, but its current support page does not give an exact count of compatible titles. Compatibility does not guarantee that every feature or behavior will match the PS4 version. Sony’s current compatibility guidance is the best place to check a specific game.

Sony made a separate launch-era estimate in October 2020: more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games available at the time would be playable on PS5. That was a statement about the launch period, not a current measurement of the catalog. Sony’s 2020 FAQ also explains that backward-compatible PS4 games are distinct from native PS5 editions.
PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. Even a PS4 digital upgrade that requires the original PS3 disc will not work on PS5, because the console cannot read that disc. A subscription does not change this disc limitation.

Will a PS4 game look or run better on PS5?
Some selected PS4 games can benefit from PS5 Game Boost, which may deliver higher or smoother frame rates. It is not a guaranteed upgrade for every game, and backward compatibility does not promise a higher resolution or identical performance in all cases. Sony notes that some PS4 functions may be absent on PS5 and that certain games can show errors or unexpected behavior. Check the individual title’s listing and support information if a specific feature matters to you.

Do PS4 controllers, PS VR, and saves work?
Controllers
Both DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers work with supported PS4 games on PS5. This does not mean DUALSHOCK 4 is a controller for PS5 editions; the support applies to PS4 games running through backward compatibility.
PlayStation VR
To use the original PS VR headset with PS5, Sony specifies the PS VR headset, a PS4 Camera, and a Camera adaptor. The PS5 HD Camera does not work for PS VR. Check Sony’s compatibility guidance for the required setup and adaptor details.

Save files and editions
You can transfer PS4 data to PS5 using Wi-Fi or compatible USB storage; Sony’s 2020 FAQ also describes LAN transfer and PS Plus cloud saves. Moving a save from a PS4 version to a separate PS5 edition is a different matter: the developer determines whether that transfer is supported, title by title. Confirm the game’s instructions before assuming a save will carry over.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check whether a specific game will work
- Look up the title on Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility page and check the current PlayStation Store label.
- Identify whether you own a digital license or a disc. A disc requires a PS5 model with a disc drive; a digital game is accessed through the account library.
- Check whether you want to play the PS4 edition or upgrade to a separate PS5 edition. Upgrades are title-specific and may be free, paid, or time-limited, as Sony described in 2020.
- Check game-specific notes for features, peripherals, and save transfer if any of those affect how you plan to play.
Storefront and account details can differ by region. Sony’s cited compatibility page is for the UK; use your region’s current PlayStation support page for local information. Sony’s US Games Support index repeats the PS3-disc limitation.
