Is The Last of Us Part II Worth Playing If You Disliked the Ending?

The Last of Us Part II has no alternate ending to unlock. Whether it is still worth playing depends on what disappointed you and what you value in the rest of the game.

Conditional yes. Keep playing—or consider a replay—if you can accept a grim story that shifts between Ellie and Abby and want to experience the journey even though the ending disappointed you. But there is no alternate, happier ending to unlock. If your main objection is that Ellie does not complete the revenge you wanted, the game’s approach may not change your mind.

First, what kind of ending disappointment did you have?

Spoiler warning: The discussion below reveals the game’s ending.

You disliked the outcome

Ellie spares Abby in the final confrontation. If you wanted Ellie to kill her, more play will not deliver that payoff: the released story does not offer an alternate ending that reverses Ellie’s decision. Whether the journey earns that outcome is a matter of taste, not something the game can settle for every player.

The perspective shift or pacing lost you

The game asks you to spend substantial time with Abby after beginning with Ellie. That shift is central to how the story is told, and it can feel deliberately uncomfortable—or like a break in momentum. Interviews reported by GameSpot discuss the perspective change and the creators’ consideration of a darker ending. Knowing it was a deliberate choice may clarify the structure, but it does not guarantee that the shift will work for you.

The emotional tone was the problem

If what you disliked was the sustained bleakness, brutality, or lack of catharsis, the ending is part of a broader experience rather than an isolated scene. Continuing is most worthwhile if you still value the characters, themes, or gameplay enough to sit with that tone.

Why players disagree about whether the ending works

Reactions vary sharply. The PlayStation Store displayed an average of 4.53 stars from 304,736 ratings when accessed in 2026, but that changing score rates the game overall; it is not a poll about the ending. Store comments include both praise for the story and complaints about pacing or story choices, and Metacritic’s critic-review page also contains positive and negative appraisals. Neither source can predict whether you will accept the ending.

The Last of Us Part I – PlayStation 5
  • Enhanced visuals: Completely rebuilt from the ground up using Naughty Dog’s latest PS5 engine technology to improve every visual detail, The Last of Us experience has been faithfully enhanced with more realistic lighting and atmosphere, more intricate environments and creative reimaginings of familiar spaces.
  • Fast loading: Initial loading times are near instant, and seamless after the first instance thanks to the PS5 console’s SSD – so you can pick up where you left off in the story and load specific encounters and chapters more quickly.
  • Haptic feedback: DualSense wireless controller haptic feedback support for every weapon elevates combat encounters, and environments are brought to life through DualSense wireless controller haptic sensations of subtle falling rain, the crunch of stepping on snow and more.
  • Adaptive triggers: All The Last of Us iconic weapons, including Joel’s revolver and Ellie’s bow, now deliver dynamic DualSense wireless controller trigger resistance and kickback on firing for deeper combat immersion.
  • 3D Audio: Designed to make use of the PS5 console’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, Naughty Dog’s newly upgraded audio engine delivers richer soundscapes, bigger explosive moments and more visceral gameplay through compatible stereo headphones (analogue or USB) or TV speakers.

Creative director Neil Druckmann and narrative lead Halley Gross reportedly discussed considering an even darker ending in which Ellie killed Abby. That context shows the released conclusion followed a creative choice that was debated; it does not prove the choice is satisfying or that the game’s themes will persuade you.

What you still get from the game beyond the ending

The decision is not only about the final scene. If you enjoyed the combat, exploration, performances, or character work, those parts may still make the experience worthwhile—even if your opinion of the conclusion stays unchanged. The PlayStation Store page’s player reviews reflect that split: some praise story and gameplay, while others criticize pacing and story choices.

PS4 original or PS5 Remastered?

Edition Platform and features Upgrade details
The Last of Us Part II PS4 original. The official Remastered product page describes the newer edition’s enhancements and modes; it does not provide a feature-by-feature comparison with the original. PS4 disc owners can upgrade to the PS5 digital version if they have a PS5 with a disc drive. The disc must be inserted to download or play the upgrade.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered Available for PS5 and PC according to PlayStation’s product information. Includes graphical enhancements, new modes, DualSense integration, and accessibility additions. Check PlayStation’s product page and the store in your region for current eligibility and pricing. Prices and promotions vary.

If you already own the PS4 disc, confirm that your PS5 has a disc drive before relying on the upgrade path. If you are choosing an edition from scratch, compare the current regional store listings; there is no need to pay for extras on the assumption they will change the ending.

So, should you play more?

  • Continue or replay: You disliked the conclusion but remain interested in the characters, perspective shift, themes, or gameplay, and are willing to accept the ending as released.
  • Move on: Your enjoyment depends on Ellie killing Abby, or you do not want to spend more time with the story’s bleak tone and structure.
  • Choose Remastered for its features, not a different conclusion: Its added modes and technical features expand the package, not the narrative outcome.

The most useful question is not whether more play will make the ending happier or universally convincing. It is whether the rest of the experience is worth revisiting on its own terms.
