Which game should you start with?
For most newcomers interested in Halo’s story, The Master Chief Collection (MCC) is the stronger starting point. It brings together six games, and Halo Support recommends beginning with a campaign. To follow the games in their original release order, start with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. Halo Support’s MCC quick-start guide gives that specific recommendation.

Halo Infinite is a better fit if you specifically want its newer story, in which the Master Chief explores Zeta Halo, or if your immediate goal is to play multiplayer without buying the multiplayer component. Its campaign is a distinct purchase or subscription-access option, not a substitute for the earlier games’ broader story foundation. Halo Support explains Infinite’s campaign and multiplayer access.
What does each game include?
| Game | Campaign | Other modes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Halo: The Master Chief Collection | Six titles: Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach and Halo 4. | Multiplayer across the included games and Firefight, a wave-based PvE mode. | Players who want several classic campaigns and a route through earlier Halo. |
| Halo Infinite | A newer Master Chief campaign set on Zeta Halo; campaign access is separate from free multiplayer. | Free-to-play multiplayer, including Arena and Big Team Battle, alongside Forge and PvP and PvE options. | Players who want Infinite’s story or want to try Halo multiplayer without paying for that component. |
The six-game count and MCC mode descriptions come from Halo Support’s collection guide. For a sense of scale, the Steam store descriptions list more than 120 multiplayer maps for MCC and more than 70 matchmaking maps for Infinite. Those are storefront figures, not a like-for-like measure: the collections, modes, map pools and counting methods differ, and Infinite’s figure may change. MCC’s Steam listing and Infinite’s Steam listing provide those descriptions.

How do their multiplayer options differ?
Halo Infinite
Infinite’s multiplayer and Academy are free to play. Halo Support describes Arena and Big Team Battle, Forge, cross-play and cross-progression, as well as PvP and PvE options and regular content updates. The multiplayer component is separate from campaign co-op: playing online with friends in the campaign requires campaign access. See Halo Support’s overview of Infinite and its guide to playing with friends.
The Master Chief Collection
MCC bundles multiplayer for its included games and adds Firefight. That variety suits players who want to revisit different eras and modes rather than focus on one current entry. Its total map figure should not be compared directly with Infinite’s matchmaking-map figure because they describe different collections and pools.

Can you play co-op locally or across Xbox and PC?
| Play situation | MCC | Halo Infinite |
|---|---|---|
| Local split-screen campaign | Supported on Xbox. Not supported on PC. | Campaign co-op is network-based, not local split-screen. |
| Local split-screen multiplayer | Supported on Xbox; up to four people can share a screen. Sessions with more than two local players are multiplayer-only. | Split-screen multiplayer is listed by Halo Support; check current platform and mode details before arranging a group. |
| Xbox and PC cross-play | Supported for some online play, but not for Campaign or Campaign Playlists. | Supported; campaign network co-op allows up to four players, with fireteam limits varying by mode. |
These distinctions matter more than a general “has co-op” label. MCC can work well for couch campaign play on Xbox, while Infinite is the clearer option for a mixed Xbox-and-PC group that wants campaign co-op online. For exact MCC split-screen and cross-play rules, consult Halo Support’s quick-start guide; for Infinite’s cross-play and campaign co-op, see its friends guide.
What do you need to buy or play online?
Infinite multiplayer is free. The campaign must be bought separately or accessed through some Game Pass memberships; physical discs include campaign access. MCC can be purchased directly or accessed through some Game Pass memberships. Catalog inclusion, subscription terms, prices and physical availability can change, so check the current listing for your region and platform rather than assuming a particular plan includes either game. Halo Support’s Infinite overview and the Steam listing describe the separate campaign access.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Pick based on what you want to do
- Want several classic campaigns? Start with MCC, beginning with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary for original release order.
- Want to try Halo multiplayer without paying for it? Start with Infinite’s free multiplayer; campaign access is separate.
- Want couch campaign co-op? Choose MCC on Xbox.
- Want to play campaign online with both Xbox and PC friends? Infinite supports cross-play and network campaign co-op; MCC campaign cross-play is unavailable.
- Already know you want Infinite’s Zeta Halo story? Choose Infinite, but confirm campaign access on your platform before downloading or buying.
Neither game is the universal winner: the practical choice is between a large earlier-story collection and a newer entry whose multiplayer is free to try. This comparison is based on the official feature descriptions cited above, not a claim that one game feels better to play.
