For a first playthrough, play The Last of Us Part I, then Left Behind, then The Last of Us Part II. Left Behind includes events set before Part I, but it contains spoilers for Part I’s main story, so its chronological placement is not the best reason to play it first.
Recommended play order
- The Last of Us Part I: Play the main single-player story first. Part I is a ground-up remake of the original game and establishes the central story. PlayStation’s Part I page says all editions include Left Behind.
- The Last of Us: Left Behind: Play this prequel chapter after Part I’s main story. It explores Ellie and Riley’s backstory, and PlayStation warns that it contains spoilers for the main story. PlayStation recommends playing Part I’s single-player story first.
- The Last of Us Part II: Continue with the sequel. PlayStation says Part II is designed as a standalone, complete story, but some details, characters, and themes have more meaning after Part I. PlayStation’s franchise FAQ recommends this sequence.
Why Left Behind comes after Part I
Left Behind is a prequel in terms of when some of its events happen, but it is structured for players who already know Part I’s main story. Playing it first would put those earlier events before the main game, but would also expose you to the spoilers PlayStation flags. For a first playthrough, follow release-friendly spoiler order rather than strict chronology: Part I, Left Behind, Part II.

Which editions do you need?
You do not need to buy both the original first game and its remake to follow the story. PlayStation describes Part I as a ground-up remake and says all editions include Left Behind. The Part I page also says there is no upgrade path from the PS3 or PS4 versions to the PS5 remake, so do not assume an older copy grants the remake.
PlayStation’s franchise page lists Part I for PS5 and PC, Part II for PS4, and Part II Remastered for PS5 and PC. Part II Remastered is an edition of Part II, not an additional story chapter to insert into the sequence. The same page describes The Last of Us Complete as bringing together definitive editions of the two main stories. Check your local store listing for platform, edition contents, and availability, which can vary by region and change over time.
