Choose gaming PC parts around the games you play, your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, and the performance you want—not model names alone. Compare CPUs and graphics cards using results for the same games and settings, then check motherboard, BIOS, memory, case, cooling, and power compatibility before upgrading.

Start with your games and display

Write down the games you play, your monitor resolution and refresh rate, the image settings you want, and any additional work such as streaming or editing. These needs define what a useful comparison looks like. A component that performs well in one game or resolution may not be the right choice for another.

  • Games: List the titles you care about, including demanding games if they matter to you.
  • Display: Note whether you play at 1080p, 1440p, or 4K, and the refresh rate you want to use.
  • Workloads: Include streaming, editing, or other tasks that may affect your CPU choice.
  • Budget: Compare the total cost of the upgrade, not just the headline component. A new motherboard, memory kit, power supply, or cooler may add to the cost.

Use the same games, resolution, settings, and testing configuration when comparing two options. Intel recommends looking for benchmarks that mirror how you plan to use your PC and checking FPS in the games you intend to play. Its guide also notes that GPU and RAM affect overall performance. Intel’s gaming CPU guide

How to compare gaming CPUs

Use game-specific results, not specs alone

Look for results for the specific games you play and the resolution and settings you plan to use. Check the rest of the tested system, too: processor results can be affected by the graphics card, memory, and other configuration details. Core count, clock speed, and cache are useful specifications, but they do not replace relevant game benchmarks.

Streaming or editing may change which CPU is a better fit. Compare results for those workloads as well as gaming if they are part of your use. Intel’s guide phrases its recommendation this way: “One of the best ways to help narrow things down further is to look for benchmarks that mirror how you plan to use your PC.” Intel, “How to Choose a Gaming CPU”

Check support before buying a CPU for an existing PC

Confirm the exact processor is supported by your motherboard, including the minimum BIOS version. Socket compatibility alone does not prove a CPU will work: a board with older firmware may not recognize a newer processor, and the system may fail to boot. Check the motherboard maker’s support page and update instructions for your exact board before removing the current CPU.

If the installed firmware does not support the new processor, find out in advance whether the board offers USB BIOS Flashback or whether you will need an older supported CPU or a retailer update service. AMD’s BIOS guidance, last updated August 12, 2026, directs users to the system or motherboard manufacturer for the correct BIOS and instructions. AMD BIOS update guidance

How to compare graphics cards

Match performance to resolution and games

Compare cards using results for the games and settings you care about, at your target resolution. Consider price/performance alongside frame rates; a model name or generation label does not establish value. AMD’s selection guide organizes its recommendations around 1080p, 1440p, and 4K. Those are the manufacturer’s criteria, not an independent ranking: the guide emphasizes gaming performance, price/performance, memory, display connections, and gaming or upscaling features in different combinations by resolution. AMD says the comparisons on that page come from its internal labs and warns that results can vary and the page may contain inaccuracies or omissions. Treat them as manufacturer comparisons, not independent test-lab results. For any benchmark, check the game, resolution, settings, graphics card, and rest of the system before drawing a conclusion.

Compare VRAM in context

Video memory capacity is one specification to consider, not a universal measure of speed or quality. For example, AMD’s comparison page lists the Radeon RX 9070 XT with 16 GB of GDDR6. That capacity does not establish how fast the card is against another model; game benchmarks and your target settings still matter. AMD’s comparison guide and AMD’s VRAM overview

AMD reported peak VRAM usage of 11.7 GB in a June 28, 2023 test across a named set of games at 4K and maximum settings. The test used a Ryzen 9 7900X, 32 GB of DDR5-4800, Windows 10 Pro, and an RX 6950 XT. This is a result for that test set and configuration, not a minimum requirement for all 4K games. AMD’s VRAM testing notes

The same AMD page documents a Far Cry 6 comparison dated May 16, 2023, at native 1440p, Ultra settings, and High ray tracing. It compared an RX 6750 XT with 12 GB against an RTX 4060 Ti with 8 GB on a Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32 GB of DDR5-5200, and Windows 11 Pro. Because this is one game and one setup from a vendor test, it should not be generalized to every title or treated as independent testing. AMD’s VRAM testing notes

Check connections and features you will use

Compare display outputs against your monitor, and consider ray tracing, rendering, and upscaling features only if they matter to the games and image settings you use. For an upgrade, check the exact graphics card’s length, thickness, power connectors, and manufacturer power recommendations against your case and power supply. These specifications vary by card; there is no single clearance or wattage figure that applies to every build.

Check the rest of the PC before upgrading

Motherboard and BIOS

For a CPU upgrade, use the motherboard maker’s support list to confirm the exact processor and required BIOS version. If an update is necessary, follow the maker’s instructions for that board and establish a workable update path before installing the new CPU. A system may not boot if its installed processor is unsupported by the current BIOS. AMD BIOS update guidance

Memory and cooler

Check the motherboard’s memory support information for the kit’s capacity, speed, timing, voltage, and features. AMD recommends consulting the board’s qualified vendor list, using modules sold together as a matched kit, and following the manual’s recommended slots and supported memory profile. AMD memory guidance

Confirm the cooler’s mounting compatibility and suitability for the processor. AMD’s troubleshooting guidance advises using a cooling solution rated for the processor’s default TDP specification and mounting it correctly. AMD troubleshooting guidance

Graphics card, case, power supply, and monitor

  • Compare the exact card’s dimensions with the available case clearance, accounting for its length and thickness.
  • Check the card’s power connectors and manufacturer power recommendations against the installed PSU.
  • Verify that the card has a display connection supported by your monitor.
  • Include any necessary case, power supply, motherboard, memory, or cooler replacement in the upgrade cost.

Use the specifications for the exact parts you own and plan to buy. The required connectors, dimensions, and power recommendations differ by model, so generic rules of thumb cannot confirm compatibility.

Check game compatibility separately

Check the game publisher’s system requirements for the titles you care about. AMD’s Upgrade Advisor documentation describes compatibility information for Steam games where information is available; for non-Steam compatibility, it directs users to the game publishers. AMD Game Explorer and Upgrade Advisor guidance

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Define the target: List games, resolution, refresh rate, image settings, and non-gaming workloads.
  2. Compare CPUs: Find results for the same games and relevant tasks; note the full tested system rather than comparing processor names alone.
  3. Compare GPUs: Use the same games, resolution, and settings. Compare frame rates and price/performance, then check VRAM, display outputs, and relevant features.
  4. Verify upgrade support: Check CPU socket and motherboard support, required BIOS, memory kit support, and cooler mounting.
  5. Confirm physical and power fit: Match the exact GPU dimensions, PSU recommendations and connectors, and display outputs to your case, power supply, and monitor.
  6. Calculate total cost: Add any supporting parts that must change before deciding whether the upgrade is worthwhile.

Prices and product rankings change over time. Compare current prices when you are ready to buy, and judge value against the game-specific performance and compatibility information for the exact parts under consideration.
