Physical and special editions
2K’s August 2024 announcement said a Standard Edition was offered on Switch and explained that physical-copy entitlements differed: physical Xbox copies received dual-generation entitlement, while PS5 physical copies did not include PS4 entitlement because the PS4 version was digital-only. The same announcement described a limited-availability Collector’s Edition with physical collectibles. In its August 2024 release-date announcement, 2K said the franchise had sold in more than 70 million copies worldwide. In its February 2025 launch notice, it reported more than 73 million copies sold-in worldwide. Both figures refer to the Civilization franchise, not to Civilization VII sales. The August announcement also quoted Firaxis Creative Director Ed Beach describing the Ages system and independent leader selection as part of the team’s goal of making an “ultimate historical strategy game”; that was a publisher-provided promotional statement, not an independent assessment.
