Civilization VII is a turn-based strategy game built around three historical Ages, with a major change from earlier entries: you choose your leader separately from the civilization you represent in each Age. What’s new in Civilization VII?
Civilization VII organizes a campaign into three historical Ages: Antiquity, Exploration and Modern. Rather than guiding one civilization unchanged from the start of the game to its end, players move through successive Ages, with some gameplay elements changing and some carrying over according to the previous civilization and player achievements. The official gameplay FAQ provides the publisher’s overview; consult current game guides and update notes for detailed mechanics.
Another key change is the separation of leaders and civilizations. That lets players combine a leader with a civilization rather than treating them as a fixed pair. In an August 20, 2024 launch-era announcement, Firaxis Executive Producer Dennis Shirk described leaders as having unique abilities and customizable attributes earned through play. That statement describes the game’s launch-era design, not a current assessment of balance or updates.
Can I choose my leader and civilization separately?
Yes. The publisher says leaders and civilizations are selected independently. Your civilization can change as the game moves through its Ages, while some elements carry forward based on the prior civilization and your achievements. Check the official gameplay FAQ for the rules that apply to the version you are playing.

Which platforms is Civilization VII on?
2K announced worldwide availability on February 11, 2025. Its launch announcement lists these platforms and stores:

Can I play Civilization VII with friends on another platform?
The official crossplay and cross-progression FAQ describes supported cross-platform multiplayer when players link a 2K Account. It reports these maximum player counts by Age for Xbox, PlayStation and PC:

Do I need a 2K Account to play online?
2K’s launch announcement says online play and features require an internet connection and a 2K Account. The crossplay FAQ also says linking a 2K Account enables supported cross-platform multiplayer. Review the 2K Account information and the game’s current support pages for account and online requirements; these statements concern online features, not a blanket claim about offline play.

The publisher distinguishes Standard, Deluxe and Settler’s editions, and separately describes a physical Collector’s Edition. Contents vary by edition and listing, so use the official game site and the seller’s exact SKU description to check what is included. In particular, the publisher warns that a Collector’s Edition version may or may not include a Steam PC Founders Edition key. Do not assume a physical collectible set includes a playable copy for your platform.

Can I play it through GeForce NOW?
2K says PC players who own Civilization VII on Steam or the Epic Games Store can play it through GeForce NOW. This is a conditional cloud-gaming option for owners of those PC versions, not a separate game purchase recommendation or a guarantee of service availability. Check 2K’s GeForce NOW FAQ and NVIDIA’s current service information for applicable terms and availability.
Where should I check for changes?
Platform support, multiplayer rules, account requirements, editions and cloud-service compatibility can change. For decisions that depend on current details, use the publisher’s game site and the relevant 2K support page linked above rather than relying on an older launch announcement. 2K’s February 2025 release also said the Civilization franchise had sold more than 73 million copies worldwide; that is a franchise-wide figure, not sales of Civilization VII.
