The Crimson Forest is a biome in the Nether, recognizable by its red vegetation, huge crimson fungi, glowing Shroomlights, and roaming hoglins. Mojang introduced it in the Nether Update; its official description also identifies the biome’s plants, hazards, and a few practical interactions.
What is the Crimson Forest?
The Crimson Forest is one of the Nether’s biomes. In Mojang’s June 23, 2020 Nether Update announcement, the company described it as a red, fungus-filled landscape and wrote, “Crimson Forests can now be found in the Nether!”

Its tree-like forms are huge crimson fungi rather than ordinary trees. Crimson nylium carpets the cave floor, giving the biome much of its characteristic color.
What blocks and plants are found there?
- Crimson nylium: The ground-covering block. Mojang says bonemeal can be used on it to grow more vegetation.
- Huge crimson fungi: The forest’s large, tree-like growths.
- Weeping vines: These grow down from ceilings and fungi.
- Shroomlights: Glowing blocks found among the vegetation and on the forest floor. Mojang identifies hoes as the appropriate tool for mining them.
- Nether wart blocks: Mojang also identifies hoes as the appropriate tool for mining these blocks.
Crimson spores swirl in the air, adding to the biome’s distinctive atmosphere.

Which mobs and hazards should you expect?
Hoglins
Hoglins wander through the Crimson Forest and are hostile to players: Mojang’s update notes say they attack on sight and can knock players off ledges. Be especially cautious near drops, where a hit can send you falling.
The same update notes say hoglins can be bred with crimson fungi and that warped fungi repel them. These details come from Mojang’s update description, not a version-by-version guide; exact behavior may depend on the game edition or version.

How is the Crimson Forest different from other Nether biomes?
The Crimson Forest stands out for its red nylium, crimson fungi, hanging weeping vines, and Shroomlights. Its defining hazard in Mojang’s description is the aggressive hoglin. These features provide a useful way to recognize it, but Mojang’s announcement does not provide comparative spawn rates or detailed biome-generation guidance.
