Why Crimson Desert’s Metacritic Scores Are So Divided

As of October 8, 2026, Metacritic lists Crimson Desert at 77/100 from 115 critic reviews and 8.8/10 from 13,492 user ratings. Both are labeled “Generally Favorable,” but they summarize different groups and kinds of responses—not a head-to-head vote on a single definition of quality. The divide makes more sense when you look at what reviewers praise, what frustrates some players, and how reactions can shift after launch.

What Metacritic’s scores show

Metacritic’s page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists Crimson Desert as released March 19, 2026. Its critic Metascore is 77, based on 115 reviews; its user score is 8.8, based on 13,492 ratings. Each is labeled “Generally Favorable.” Metacritic’s score page is a snapshot: both scores and counts can change.

Measure Score Breakdown shown on Metacritic
Critic reviews 77/100 from 115 reviews 84 positive (73%), 30 mixed (26%), 1 negative (1%)
User ratings 8.8/10 from 13,492 ratings 11,658 positive (86%), 742 mixed (5%), 1,092 negative (8%)

Breakdown percentages may not total exactly 100 because of rounding. The critic score aggregates professional reviews; the user score aggregates user ratings. They are not interchangeable samples, and the gap alone does not show that ratings were manipulated or explain why any individual reviewer scored the game as they did.

Why critics and players can weigh the game differently

Crimson Desert pairs a large world and freedom to approach traversal, combat, and quests with a dense collection of systems. That combination can be a draw for players who like discovering their own way through a sprawling game, while feeling cumbersome to people who expect clear rules, responsive controls, or a more focused story.

World, exploration, and freedom

One selected Wccftech review excerpt on Metacritic praises the world’s density and the freedom to handle traversal, combat, and quest completion in different ways. It also suggests a more cohesive narrative could have raised the review’s score. This is one critic’s assessment, not a claim that critics broadly share the same priorities.

Systems, clarity, and polish

A selected Game Rant excerpt on the same Metacritic critic-review page says the game may suit players who enjoy exploration and long-form progression, but frustrate those looking for streamlined systems, a stronger narrative focus, or clearer rules. MGG’s excerpt criticizes sluggish controls, clunky mechanics, glitches, and systems that fail to work, while still recognizing strengths in the open world. These reviews illustrate differing evaluation criteria; they do not represent every critic or player.

Why launch reactions may not match later ones

Early friction can matter disproportionately in a game with many interlocking mechanics: confusing inputs or puzzles that do not explain their rules can make exploration feel like work before a player has settled into the systems. In a March 20, 2026 launch report, PC Gamer described controls and systems density as sources of frustration, including confusing inputs and poorly communicated puzzles. It also reported an approximate Steam 24-hour peak of 239,000 players. That is a historical launch-period figure, not a current player count or a measure of Metacritic sentiment.

Rank #2

A later snapshot points to movement in user ratings over time. In an opinion published March 30, 2026, TechRadar reported that the Metacritic user score had risen from 7.8 shortly after launch to 8.7 by the article’s publication. The author attributed the warmer response partly to players spending more time with the game and to Pearl Abyss updates. That is a dated observation and interpretation, not a controlled analysis proving what caused the change; neither value should be mistaken for the current score listed above.

What Pearl Abyss said about feedback

On March 20, 2026, Pearl Abyss announced that Crimson Desert had sold through 2 million copies worldwide. Windows Central reproduced the studio’s statement: “We will listen closely to the wide range of feedback shared by the community and work to make improvements quickly, doing our utmost to make the journey ahead even more enjoyable for our players.” The statement expresses the studio’s response to feedback; it does not establish that any particular criticism has since been resolved.
