Diablo III: Reaper of Souls is a substantial improvement for players who already enjoy Diablo III, but it is not a guaranteed conversion for anyone who disliked the base game. Reviews praised the expansion’s new campaign and Crusader, while Adventure mode gives players a reason to revisit existing areas after the story. The console Ultimate Evil Edition packages the base game with the expansion, making it a different proposition from buying the PC expansion alone.
What Reaper of Souls adds to Diablo III
Blizzard announced Reaper of Souls with a fifth campaign act, the Crusader class, and a higher character-level ceiling. The announcement listed a level cap of 70 and also highlighted randomized environments, quests and monsters, along with changes to loot and item crafting. These were the features announced in 2013, not a claim that every platform edition received identical features or later updates. Activision Blizzard’s announcement provides the original feature list.
A new act and class
Act V extends the campaign, while the Crusader adds another character class to build and take into combat. GameSpot’s PC review treated these as central additions, alongside Adventure mode. Game Informer’s PC review characterized the expansion as a significant turnaround, a more enthusiastic assessment than the cautious view that the changes will not work for every lapsed player.
Adventure mode and continued play
Adventure mode is important if the appeal of the expansion depends on what happens after the campaign. GameSpot argued that it makes existing content more rewarding, giving players another way to spend time in Diablo III beyond progressing through the new act. That distinction matters: the added campaign is finite, while Adventure mode is the part reviewers pointed to as a reason to keep playing.

What PC reviewers thought—and the limit of the turnaround
Game Informer’s PC review presented Reaper of Souls as a significant recovery for Diablo III. GameSpot also found value in the expansion’s additions, particularly Adventure mode, but made an important qualification: “If you’ve played Diablo III before and found that it wasn’t for you, the changes Reaper of Souls makes to the game won’t be far-reaching enough to change your mind.” That is GameSpot’s review judgment, not a prediction about every player.
The practical takeaway is to consider why the original game did not hold your interest. If you wanted more campaign, a new class, or a better reason to revisit content, the expansion addresses those interests. If the core Diablo III experience itself was the problem, the reviews do not suggest that Reaper of Souls replaces it with a fundamentally different game.

PC expansion or console Ultimate Evil Edition?
The editions serve different purchase situations. On PC, Reaper of Souls was reviewed as an expansion to Diablo III. The console Ultimate Evil Edition bundled the original game with the expansion content. Activision Blizzard described the package as bringing the expansion to console and including the content, features and updates released for Diablo III up to that point; that historical description should not be read as a guarantee of identical features or subsequent updates across every platform.

How the console reviews regarded co-op
Game Informer’s PS4 review described the complete game as enjoyable solo and emphasized local and online cooperative play for up to four players. The Guardian also praised the Ultimate Evil Edition, highlighting a tangible sense of character growth. These are individual reviewers’ assessments rather than measured consensus, but they point to a clear reason to choose the console package: it offers the base game and expansion in a format reviewed with both solo play and couch or online co-op in mind.
Activision Blizzard’s 2014 announcement stated that all four console versions supported four-player same-screen and online multiplayer. That statement applies to the console versions addressed in the announcement; it does not establish that every platform has the same controls, features or update history.
Who should return to Reaper of Souls?
- Return if you liked Diablo III’s core play and want another campaign act, the Crusader, or more ways to continue playing afterward.
- Consider the console bundle if you need the base game too or want to play locally with other people; check the exact edition and platform on the listing.
- Be cautious if the original game’s central appeal did not work for you. GameSpot specifically warned that the expansion’s changes may not be far-reaching enough to change that reaction.
- Do not expect the reviews to identify one definitive best platform. The sources support comparing ownership, controls and co-op needs, but do not establish a universal platform winner.
For historical context, Blizzard CEO and cofounder Mike Morhaime said the Ultimate Evil Edition “brings Reaper of Souls to console gamers for the first time, and wraps all of the content, features, and updates we’ve released for Diablo III into one epic package.” The statement accompanied the 2014 console announcement and describes the package at that time.
