World of Warcraft: The War Within introduced new zones, solo-friendly Delves, the Earthen allied race, Hero Talents, Warbands, and fresh group content. Blizzard launched the expansion on August 26, 2024, as the opening chapter of the Worldsoul Saga. These are six useful ways to understand what the expansion added—not an official Blizzard list of exactly six features.
1. Four zones make up Khaz Algar
The expansion takes players to Khaz Algar, a subterranean region containing four zones. Blizzard’s August 2024 launch notes gave each zone a level range for the launch-era leveling campaign:
| Zone | Launch-era leveling range |
|---|---|
| Isle of Dorn | 70–73 |
| Ringing Deeps | 73–75 |
| Hallowfall | 75–78 |
| Azj-Kahet | 78–80 |
These are the ranges in Blizzard’s launch announcement, not a guarantee that every current leveling route follows the same sequence.
2. Delves offer short adventures with flexible group sizes
Delves are replayable, seasonal, role-agnostic instances that combine activities such as combat, puzzles, platforming, bosses, and rewards. Blizzard’s June 5, 2024 Delves overview describes an average completion time of 10–15 minutes.
#1 Best Overall
Can you play Delves solo?
Yes. Blizzard says Delves can be played solo or with up to four friends, alongside an NPC companion. Brann Bronzebeard is the companion available at the system’s introduction.
How does Delve difficulty work?
Delves have difficulty tiers. Completing a higher tier unlocks the next tier for the player’s Warband. That lets players engage with the activity without relying on the fixed group format of a traditional dungeon or raid.
3. The Earthen join the playable allied races
The Earthen are a playable allied race introduced in The War Within. Blizzard’s launch notes say players can unlock Alliance or Horde Earthen characters by completing the Earthen quests and the overall level-up campaign. The race’s availability is therefore tied to completing that campaign content rather than simply starting the expansion.
4. Hero Talents add another layer to specialization builds
Hero Talents are self-contained talent trees that add progression and class-fantasy choices to class specializations. Each specialization can choose between two Hero Talent trees. The choice provides a way to shape a character’s specialization without treating one tree as universally best.
Rank #3
According to Blizzard’s Hero Talents guide, the trees unlock at level 71 and each has 11 nodes. Players earn one Hero Talent point per level through level 80. The system’s structure is distinct from a current build recommendation: class balance can change, so these details do not establish which tree performs best now.
5. Warbands share selected progress across characters
Warbands extend selected progression and collections across characters on a Battle.net account, including characters of different factions. Blizzard’s Warbands preview names Warband bank access, The War Within renown, achievements, and collections among the shared elements.

Blizzard’s launch notes list eight new dungeons and the Nerub-ar Palace raid. These provide group-oriented activities alongside Delves, rather than replacing them. The expansion recap also lists Deephaul Ravine as a new battleground, extending the range of activities beyond dungeons and raids.

Skyriding arrived in the pre-expansion update
Skyriding is closely associated with the expansion period, but it was part of Blizzard’s July 2024 pre-expansion update rather than one of the six August launch features above. That update made Dragonriding available on many flying mounts in flyable areas under the name Skyriding, and let players switch to Steady Flight. Blizzard’s pre-expansion update announcement describes the rollout.
