There are player reports of an ability-allocation issue in Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition, especially when a conversation trait gives a character an ability bonus. But the available reports do not establish a general bug that removes points at every level-up. First identify whether you mean an ability, attribute, or talent point, then compare the amount awarded with the amount you expected.
Is a point actually missing?
Players often call several different things a “skill point.” In Divinity: Original Sin, the relevant categories are attribute points, ability points, and talent points. They have different level-up schedules, so a character may receive no point in a particular category at a given level. A 2015 Steam discussion about points apparently disappearing at level-up includes replies raising this possibility; it does not prove that the original player miscounted, but it shows why the point category and level history matter.
- Ability point: used to raise an ability such as Bartering or Crafting.
- Attribute point: used to improve an attribute.
- Talent point: used to acquire a talent.
- Skill learned from a book: learning an individual skill is not the same as spending an ability point.
Write down the point category you expected, the character’s level before and after each level-up, and the points actually awarded in that category. Check the game’s level-up history rather than assuming that every category gains a point at every level.
Could a trait bonus make an ability point seem missing?
Historical reports describe a narrower Enhanced Edition behavior involving ability bonuses from conversation traits. In a GameFAQs report, a player could not raise Bartering after a conversation trait had supplied a bonus point. A commenter said Larian had described the behavior as known and expected a later patch. That is a secondhand account, not a direct statement from Larian, and it does not establish how often the issue occurs or whether it remains in current builds.

A related Larian forum thread describes a character whose trait-derived Crafting bonus appeared to make an extra available ability point necessary before Crafting could be raised; once enough points were available, the normal cost was charged once. These reports suggest that a bonus may affect the apparent requirement to allocate an ability point. They do not show that points were universally deleted at level-up.
Check the edition and the ability’s cost
Confirm whether the installed game is Divinity: Original Sin Classic or Enhanced Edition. The trait-bonus reports concern Enhanced Edition; do not assume their behavior applies to Classic. A separate Classic-version discussion says the point cost to raise an ability increases with its rank. That is edition-specific context, not evidence that Enhanced Edition uses the same behavior in the reported case.

- ivinity Original Sin,
Also note the platform and visible game version or build. Larian’s 2016 Enhanced Edition patch list records several fixes but does not specifically identify the reported missing ability-point or conversation-trait allocation issue. That patch list therefore cannot confirm that this particular behavior was fixed.
What to do if your point total still does not reconcile
- Record the game and build: note Classic or Enhanced Edition, platform, and the visible version or build number.
- Name the point category: state whether the discrepancy concerns an ability, attribute, or talent point. If an ability is involved, give its name and current rank.
- Reconstruct the level-ups: compare points expected with points actually awarded in that category at each level. Do not count a skill-book purchase or learned skill as an ability point.
- Check bonuses: note any conversation trait or other source that adds to the displayed ability, and when it was acquired.
- Preserve the save and contact Larian support: provide the save, affected character, level, point category, edition, platform, build, bonus sources, and the steps that preceded the discrepancy.
The available reports do not establish a safe, verified save-editing or point-granting workaround. Keep the original save intact while seeking help.

What the reports establish—and what they do not
Historical player discussions support the existence of reports about Enhanced Edition ability allocation when a trait supplies an ability bonus. Another discussion describes an apparent level-up loss, but replies point out that categories do not necessarily receive points on the same schedule. Larian’s 2016 patch list does not specifically resolve the trait-related report. These sources do not establish current reproduction, frequency, or a platform-specific remedy.
