Stardew Valley hats change your farmer’s appearance and otherwise have no effect: they do not improve combat, farming, fishing, or other stats. The Stardew Valley Wiki describes them as cosmetic clothing items. Their main purpose is personal style, and many can also be collected, tailored, or placed on animals.
Do hats give you stats in Stardew Valley?
No. Hats are cosmetic; they do not provide gameplay bonuses. The clothing overview distinguishes them from equipment such as rings, footwear, and trinkets, which can provide gameplay benefits. Wearing a hat is therefore a style choice, not a build decision.

How do you get hats in Stardew Valley?
There is no single method for collecting every hat. The route depends on the specific hat: many become available through achievements, while others come from events, vendors, treasure, tailoring, or rare drops.
Unlock the hat shop
The day after you earn your first achievement, the mouse in the Abandoned House sends a letter that opens the hat shop. Most achievements unlock a hat for sale there, but achievements are not the source of every hat.

Look for event and special-condition hats
Some hats are tied to festivals, the Casino, the Adventurer’s Guild, or Skull Cavern treasure rooms. Their availability depends on the relevant event, location, or condition rather than the hat shop’s achievement list.
Find rare drops
A few hats have small chances to appear through specific activities. The Stardew Valley Wiki lists a 0.001% chance of finding the Living Hat while cutting weeds and a separate 0.01% chance for a Living Hat drop from Wilderness Golems. These figures apply only to those named sources; they are not general odds for finding hats.

Make hats through tailoring
Tailoring unlocks in a cutscene on the first sunny day after you acquire at least one Cloth. Use a sewing machine with Cloth and another item to produce clothing; hats are among the possible results. Sewing machines are available at Emily’s house, and another can be obtained as a reward for the Rock Rejuvenation special order.
Can you put hats on pets or other creatures?
Yes. In version 1.6, hats can be placed on cats and dogs. The wiki’s version history also records earlier placement options for horses, children, and sea urchins in fish tanks. These are playful cosmetic uses, not gameplay effects.
Can you sell hats?
The Stardew Valley Wiki says hats cannot be sold through the Shipping Bin or to in-game shops. Tailored shirts, pants, and hats also cannot be sold in-game.
