Partly. Your Nintendo Account is associated with your game saves, but that does not mean your progress is automatically backed up online. On Nintendo Switch 2, save data is stored in the console’s System Memory. To recover it through the cloud, you need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a game that supports Save Data Cloud. You can also move a save directly between nearby consoles without a membership.
Where does Nintendo Switch 2 save data live?
Nintendo says save data is stored in the console’s System Memory, whether you play from a game card or use downloaded software. Saves are generally associated with an individual user, and Nintendo’s multi-console guidance describes them as associated with both the Nintendo Account and the console. That account association is not an online backup.
Save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD Express card. Deleting downloaded software, however, leaves its save data intact; after redownloading the game, you can continue using the existing save. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 Data Management FAQ.
When does your account let you restore progress from the cloud?
Nintendo Switch Online’s Save Data Cloud is the online backup option, but it has two conditions: you need an active membership, and the game must support cloud saves. Nintendo identifies unsupported games and says you can check a title’s details in Nintendo eShop or its software menu. Do not assume that a game’s save is backed up just because you use the same Nintendo Account. Nintendo explains the requirements in its Save Data Cloud backup instructions and its guide to identifying games that support cloud backup.

For compatible games, automatic backup is enabled when you become a Nintendo Switch Online member. Settings can be adjusted separately for each game and user. Nintendo says backups may occur after you close software or while the console is in Sleep Mode, but automatic backup settings, connectivity, and game compatibility can affect whether a current copy is available.
Check which save is newer before downloading
- On the console, open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user and game whose save you want to check.
- Compare the console save with the timestamp for the latest cloud backup. If the console save is newer, manually back it up rather than replacing it with an older cloud copy. If the cloud copy is newer, you can download it.
Downloading a cloud backup replaces the existing save for that game on the target console. Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered, so check the timestamps and choose carefully. Follow Nintendo’s instructions for downloading Save Data Cloud backups.

If your Nintendo Switch Online membership expires
You cannot access cloud backups while your membership is inactive. Nintendo says access to previous backups can return if you resubscribe within 180 days; it does not promise access after that period. Do not treat a membership lapse as indefinite cloud storage.

| Option | What it requires | What happens to the save | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Save Data Cloud | Active Nintendo Switch Online membership, a supported game, and the same Nintendo Account on the console using the backup. | A compatible cloud copy can be downloaded. Downloading replaces the target console’s save for that game. | Keeping an off-console backup for supported games or restoring a save without the original console. |
| Nearby console transfer | Both consoles, internet access on both, close proximity, and the same Nintendo Account linked to the relevant user on each console. A membership is not required. | The save is moved, then deleted from the source console. If the target already has a save, you can cancel or overwrite it; overwritten data cannot be recovered. | A one-time move when you still have the old console, including for a compatible game that does not support cloud backup. |
Nintendo says compatible software can transfer between Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Cloud backups for Nintendo Switch software can also be shared between those consoles using the same Nintendo Account. A Switch 2 Edition may include Switch 2-exclusive features or content that are not accessible on the original Switch. The transfer is not an ongoing sync: after moving a save, the source copy is gone. See Nintendo’s nearby save-data transfer instructions and its guide to playing games across multiple Nintendo Switch consoles.

Which recovery route should you use?
- You still have the old console: Check whether the game supports cloud saves. If it does not, a nearby transfer may be an option. Confirm which console has the latest progress before proceeding.
- You no longer have the old console: For a supported game, check Save Data Cloud on a console using the same Nintendo Account and compare backup timestamps before downloading.
- You deleted the downloaded game: Redownload it; Nintendo says deleting the software does not delete its save data.
- Your save is missing: Check the user and game’s cloud-save compatibility, internet connection, and per-user automatic backup settings. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guide is titled Save Data Cloud Backup Files Are Missing on Nintendo Switch 2.
