No. In vanilla Minecraft, ordinary food does not spoil or expire in your inventory or a chest, no matter how long you keep it. Rotten flesh is a separate item—not food that has gone bad. Mods, datapacks, or custom server rules can add spoilage, so that answer applies to unmodified gameplay.

Does food expire in vanilla Minecraft?

No. Ordinary food has no expiration timer while carried or stored in a chest. Cooking and storage do not preserve food in vanilla Minecraft; there is nothing to preserve because food does not spoil. Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation for the minecraft:food component lists properties such as nutrition, saturation modifier, and conversion to another item on use, but no spoilage or expiration property: Bedrock food component documentation. That documentation describes the Bedrock component, not every possible custom implementation.

Is rotten flesh food that spoiled?

No. Rotten flesh is its own item associated with zombies; it does not come from leaving another food item in storage. Minecraft’s 2020 “Taking Inventory: Rotten Flesh” article says it was added as a zombie drop and that eating it restores two chunks of hunger but can cause the Hunger effect. Wolves can eat it, too.

Can mods or servers make food spoil?

Yes. Mods, datapacks, and custom servers can introduce spoilage or other food rules, and their behavior depends on the specific content and configuration. Check the mod’s description or the server’s rules for its version and settings. A Minecraft Feedback post proposing food expiration and preservation is a suggestion, not evidence that the feature exists in the vanilla game: Food Expiry and Preservation proposal.

What should you do with stored food?

In unmodified Minecraft, keep food in your inventory or a chest without worrying about it expiring. For broader context on how food replenishes hunger and saturation, see the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki food article.
