Which subscription do you need for Minecraft multiplayer?

These are multiplayer requirements, not a statement that every Minecraft player needs an Xbox subscription. The cited requirements do not establish regional prices or every local purchasing condition; check the relevant platform store for those details.
Can you play Minecraft with friends on PC without Xbox Game Pass Core?
Yes. Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock comparison says PC online play needs an internet connection; it does not identify an Xbox console subscription as a PC requirement. Make sure you and your friends use the same edition: Java players join Java games, and Bedrock players join Bedrock games. Java and Bedrock use different servers and cannot directly join each other’s games.

Do friends need a Realm subscription to join?
No. Realms is optional paid hosting for a shared world that stays available online. The host pays for the Realm; invited friends do not each need their own Realm subscription. That hosting subscription is separate from console multiplayer access: a player on Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch still needs the online subscription required by their platform. - Edition: Confirm you are both playing Java or both playing Bedrock. Bedrock supports cross-play across supported devices, but that does not remove a console’s platform subscription requirement.
- Realm invitation: If the world is a Realm, make sure the host has invited the account you are using.
- Account and permissions: Check that you are signed into the correct Microsoft account and, for a child account, that multiplayer permissions are enabled.
- Connection and version: Check that your network is stable and that the game versions are current.
Nintendo’s Minecraft for Nintendo Switch listing describes cross-platform play when everyone uses Bedrock Edition; Switch online multiplayer still requires Nintendo Switch Online.
