Epic confirmed lightsabers would return to Fortnite as in-match weapons for the 2025 Galactic Battle season—not as pickaxe cosmetics. The season ran from May 2 to June 7, 2025, so it is no longer upcoming. The official announcement did not confirm lightsaber pickaxes, and the sources available do not establish a later announcement.
What Epic actually announced
In an Epic-authored preview published on PlayStation.Blog on May 1, 2025, Senior Marketing Manager Ryan Broseker said Fortnite: Galactic Battle would begin the next day. The post described lightsabers as gameplay items players could obtain by training with holographic followers of the light or dark sides, or by looting one from another player. Read Epic’s season announcement on PlayStation.Blog.
The announcement also outlined what the lightsaber did in a match: it could deflect blaster bolts and grant movement benefits, including faster sprinting, higher jumps, and immunity to fall damage. Those are weapon and gameplay mechanics, not the function of a cosmetic harvesting tool.
Weapon and pickaxe mean different things in Fortnite
- Weapon: An item used during a match, with combat or movement effects. The lightsabers described for Galactic Battle fit this category.
- Pickaxe: A cosmetic harvesting tool used to break objects. A lightsaber pickaxe would be a separate cosmetic item, even if it looked like or shared a name with an in-match weapon.
Epic’s announcement supports the weapon claim. It does not say that a lightsaber would be available as a pickaxe.

Why pickaxes were discussed—and what is still unconfirmed
A contemporaneous Gfinity article raised the possibility of pickaxes after promotional artwork appeared to show unusual lightsabers, but characterized that possibility as rumor. Promotional imagery is not the same as an Epic confirmation, and the official season preview did not announce the cosmetic. Gfinity’s April 28, 2025 report is useful for understanding where the speculation came from, not as proof that pickaxes were released or announced.
Epic’s earlier Find the Force event also treated lightsabers as melee weapons: players could earn one from Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, or Darth Maul. That 2023 event is precedent for their gameplay role, not evidence of a pickaxe cosmetic. Epic’s v24.30 update notes describe that event.

StarWars.com’s May 1, 2026 coverage discussed Fortnite Star Wars experiences, quests, and rotating shop outfits and accessories. It does not establish a later lightsaber-pickaxe announcement.
