Bethesda’s launch information lists Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox App for Windows PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5. Its platform FAQ also names Battle.net, Game Pass Ultimate (including PC Game Pass), and GeForce NOW. A separate launch FAQ lists xCloud, which requires Game Pass Ultimate, and Boosteroid as access options. Catalogues and availability can change, so check the service or store for current access. Bethesda says a Bethesda.net account is not required to play.
Why is DOOM: The Dark Ages single-player only?
Bethesda describes the game as a “dark fantasy/sci-fi single-player experience.” The developers’ explanation is that they made the campaign-only decision early, allowing the team to concentrate on building and polishing the campaign rather than supporting a multiplayer component.
#1 Best Overall
- Developed by id Software, DOOM: The Dark Ages is the prequel to the critically acclaimed DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal that tells the epic cinematic origin story of the DOOM Slayer’s rage.
- In this third installment of the modern DOOM series, players will step into the blood-stained boots of the DOOM Slayer, in this never-before-seen dark and sinister medieval war against Hell.
- A dark fantasy/sci-fi single-player experience that delivers the searing combat and over-the-top visuals of the incomparable DOOM franchise, powered by the latest idTech engine. With a customizable difficulty system, it’s the perfect entry point whether you’re new to the franchise or a long time fan.
- As the super weapon of gods and kings, shred enemies with devastating favorites like the Super Shotgun while also wielding a variety of new bone-chewing weapons, including the versatile Shield Saw.
- Experience the origin story of the DOOM Slayer’s rage in this epic, cinematic, and action-packed story.
Executive producer Marty Stratton and game director Hugo Martin have been quoted in a secondary Reddit discussion reproducing comments attributed to a Eurogamer Q&A. Stratton said the team wanted to “go all in on the campaign”; Martin connected that focus to including the dragon and Atlan mech, elements the team had wanted to bring to the series. Because the available reproduction is secondary, these comments are best treated as reported explanations rather than independently verified verbatim quotations.
The supported takeaway is a creative and development choice: the team prioritized a larger, more ambitious single-player experience. The available sources do not establish that multiplayer was dropped because of technical limitations or lack of player interest.

Platforms, editions, and physical-copy details
Bethesda’s platform FAQ distinguishes between physical formats by platform. Check the edition and your hardware before buying:
- Xbox Series X: Physical Xbox copies include a base-game disc.
- Xbox Series S: It cannot play physical copies; use a digital version.
- PlayStation 5 with a disc drive: Physical copies include a base-game disc.
- PS5 Digital Edition: A disc-drive attachment is required to install from a physical disc.
- Steam physical copies: These contain a Steam redemption code, not a game disc.
The Xbox product page says the Premium Edition includes the base game, Revelations DLC, a digital artbook and soundtrack, and the Divinity Skin Pack. The Premium Upgrade for Game Pass members and Standard Edition owners does not include the base game. Bethesda’s September 14, 2026 update says the DOOM Anthology bundle includes the Premium Edition on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5; existing owners do not automatically receive The Dark Ages free through that update. Verify the bundle contents and current availability with the storefront before purchasing.

What to know before you buy
- There is no multiplayer mode; the game is built around its single-player campaign.
- Choose a digital copy if you own an Xbox Series S or PS5 Digital Edition without a disc-drive attachment.
- On Steam, a physical retail copy is a redemption code rather than a disc.
- Compare the Standard and Premium contents if you want the Revelations DLC or digital extras; an upgrade does not replace the base game.
- The limited-edition DOOM: The Dark Ages Xbox Wireless Controller listed by Xbox is an optional accessory, not a requirement.
