Placement affects what can combine, while deck choices, traits, purchases, and Dog Tags layer tactical decisions onto the merge puzzle. That makes “Tetris meets Balatro” a useful shorthand—but the actual appeal is in Dogpile’s own mix of spatial play and build-making.
How do you play Dogpile?
You drop dogs into a container-like play area, positioning them so matching dogs can touch and merge into a bigger dog. Merges earn bones or points, and play also brings in money for purchases. The board’s limited space makes placement matter: each drop affects the matches you can make and the room left for what comes next. This hands-on description comes from PC Gamer’s December 2025 preview; the game’s Steam listing describes the core rule as matching dogs touching and combining into a bigger dog.
Where do the Balatro and Tetris comparisons fit?
The spatial puzzle
Tetris is a loose comparison for the spatial pressure of placing descending pieces in a crowded play area. Dogpile is not Tetris: its defining move is merging matching dogs, rather than completing lines. Its merge premise also brings to mind Suika-style games, as The Verge’s feature and PC Gamer’s preview note.
The escalating build
The Balatro comparison points to the way a straightforward central loop can gain depth through layered choices. In Dogpile, deck refinement, dog traits, purchases, and Dog Tags alter how a run develops. The Verge frames the game as a deckbuilding match-3 roguelike with a Balatro-like twist, but Dogpile’s systems and merge rules are its own—not a shared affiliation or identical set of mechanics.

What do traits and Dog Tags add?
Beyond making the next match, players can shape how dogs behave and how their traits work together. Steam describes customizing dogs with special traits and using Dog Tags that change how dogs and traits function. PC Gamer’s preview names examples of traits—Barky, Timid, Sleepy, and Cool—and describes Dog Tags as a way to add traits. Together, those systems give players reasons to think about combinations and future drops, not just the immediate merge.
Who made Dogpile, and where can you play it?
Steam credits Studio Folly, Toot Games, and Foot as developers and WINGS as publisher. The official Dogpile site describes it as a collaborative project by Studio Folly and Toot Games (Foot), made possible by WINGS and VICSCREEN. The official site lists iOS, Google Play, Nintendo Switch, and Steam as ways to play; availability can differ by platform and change over time, so check the relevant store for current status. Steam lists the release date as December 10, 2025, and identifies the game as single-player.

Is Dogpile more than a cute merge game?
Its dogs provide the immediate hook, but the strategic pitch is the combination of board management and run-building. You decide where to drop each dog, pursue matches for their rewards, and use deck and trait systems to influence what the puzzle can become. The result is a merge game with roguelike-deckbuilder choices layered over it, rather than a simple sequence of matching pairs.
A January 2026 PC Gamer review describes merge chains as a satisfying moment in play; that is the reviewer’s impression, not a guarantee of how every run will feel. Steam also lists a digital behind-the-scenes add-on, “The Dog Files: Behind the Scenes of Dogpile.”
