Dustborn is a single-player, story-driven action-adventure built around a cross-country trip, a found-family crew, and the power of words. Its strongest appeal is its characters, dialogue, and comic-book-inspired presentation; its action combat is a less convincing draw, with one review criticizing its depth. It is best suited to players who want a narrative-led journey rather than a combat-first adventure.
What kind of game is Dustborn?
Dustborn is a road-trip adventure set in an alternate-history America. The story begins in 2030, three decades after an event called the Broadcast. You play Pax, an exile and con artist hired to carry a package from Pacifica to Nova Scotia through the Justice-controlled American Republic. Along the way, Pax recruits a crew and faces the authorities and other pursuers. Red Thread Games’ official game page and Quantic Dream’s overview describe the premise and setting.
The game combines dialogue and relationship choices with location exploration, missions, band activities, and action sequences. Its comic-book-inspired look and road-trip structure set it apart from both a pure visual novel and a combat-focused action game.
How does Dustborn play?
Dialogue, words, and crew relationships
Conversation is central to the journey. Quantic Dream describes branching dialogue and relationships that change as the crew travels. Pax can use Vox—word-based abilities—to influence people during conversations, while Shouts are used as combat abilities. These are the publisher’s descriptions of the systems; they do not by themselves establish how satisfying each feels in play.

- The power of words - Words have power. Like, actual power. Fight with Shouts and use Vox in conversations to ma¬nipulate people and talk your way out of hairy situations. Craft new words, and learn to wield a lingual arsenal against enemies...and friends.
- A road-trip across a divided continent - On the road across an alternate history America, you’ll stop at iconic lo¬cations, take on unexpected assignments, meet a colorful cast of characters, enlist new crew members, and evade (or fight) your pursuers. See beautiful sights along the highway, rendered in a colorful graphic-novel-inspired art style that brings stunning 2D illustrations to 3D life.
- A diverse cast of characters - Your crew is your (found) family. Round up, manage and lean on a motley mob of mis¬fits with peculiar powers, compelling stories and clashing personalities. Branching dialogues lead to choices that shape relationships and change how your crew feels about themselves and others.
- Gameplay as varied as the landscape - In each location you’ll explore, investigate and chat with the people you meet, use the crew to overcome challenges, craft new Shouts and Vox, and rehearse with your band. You might also find yourself throwing Molotov cocktails from a motorbike, swing a baseball bat to take down helicopters…and more. You know, just normal everyday stuff.

Exploration, travel, and band activities
Between confrontations, you investigate places, speak with characters, take on missions, and spend time with the band. Motorcycle sequences and melee combat are also part of the feature set listed by the publisher. The result is a deliberately varied structure, with story and travel linking its different activities.
Action combat
Combat is the main caveat for players seeking a deep action system. Spanish outlet Meristation praised the presentation and the exploration of themes and relationships, but criticized the combat as shallow. That is one publication’s assessment, not a claim about every player’s experience. Read Meristation’s review.
Is Dustborn worth playing?
Consider Dustborn if your priority is a character-led story, expressive presentation, and a journey that shifts between conversation, exploration, music, and action. Its central hook is not combat alone: the trip and the crew’s relationships are the connective tissue. If you mainly want demanding, mechanically rich fighting, the combat criticism is a reason to temper expectations.

Dustborn launched on 20 August 2024. The studio lists Windows, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series consoles; the publisher also specifies Steam, Epic Games Store, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. Red Thread Games later announced a macOS 15 release on 8 July 2025, with native support for Apple Silicon and Intel. Platform and release details are available from the studio, the publisher, and the studio’s announcement archive.
The studio’s archive records version 1.14 on 6 June 2025, with changes covering combat, bus life, crew details, narrative content, and bug fixes. Its macOS release announcement says that version included content and quality-of-life changes added since launch. That makes the launch-era PS5 performance observations useful context, but not a substitute for checking the version and platform you plan to play.

Does Dustborn have a demo?
An official announcement describes an updated demo covering the first two chapters, with progress carrying into the purchased game and an estimated play time of around two hours depending on pace. The announcement also cautions that the demo may not receive every later update. Its current availability is not established here, so check the relevant storefront before planning to try it.
Physical and Deluxe editions
Meristation reports that Meridiem Games distributed physical PlayStation and Xbox editions. It describes a Deluxe Edition containing a 32-page prequel comic, two postcards, and a map of the alternate-history United States. This is reported edition information, not confirmation of current stock or of what a particular regional listing includes. Check the retailer’s listing for the platform, edition, contents, and availability before buying. Meristation’s review discusses the reported physical editions.
Ratings and player reception
The publisher lists PEGI 16, ESRB M, USK 12, and CERO C. These are territory-specific classifications, not interchangeable ratings; consult the rating used in your region. Quantic Dream’s page lists them.
Steam displays selected review excerpts, including praise for the dialogue and for stories where choices matter. Those storefront excerpts are examples, not a complete measure of critical consensus. User-review totals and percentages can change, so a fixed figure would be easy to misread as current.
