Kyle Crane is no longer biologically an ordinary human in Dying Light: The Beast: infection and years of experiments have left him with both human and zombie-like traits. But he has not simply become a monster. He remains Kyle in the more important personal sense—someone who can make choices, form bonds and fight for other people, even as the beast inside him threatens his control.
What happened to Kyle after The Following?
Techland says Kyle was captured by the Baron and subjected to painful experiments for years. He escaped with human and zombie DNA in conflict inside him, a condition connected to his infection at the end of Dying Light: The Following and the Baron’s experiments splicing viral strains into his DNA. In an interview with Xbox Wire, Techland’s franchise director described the ending of The Following as Kyle becoming “half-survivor, half-monster.” Techland’s interview with Epic Games Store and its Xbox Wire interview explain the connection.
The Beast is intended to answer the long-running question of which The Following ending is canon. The game does not present Kyle as biologically unchanged; it presents him as a hybrid whose human and viral traits are in conflict.
In what sense is he still human?
His humanity is clearest in his identity and agency, not in an unchanged body. Techland’s development blog describes Kyle’s first-game arc as a shift from mercenary work toward helping people and valuing community. In The Beast, he initially pursues revenge against the Baron, then recognizes he cannot do everything alone and forms alliances and resistance. His capacity to connect with others and choose to help them is evidence that the beast has not erased the person he was. Techland’s development blog describes that character arc.

How the game shows his two sides
Techland says Kyle’s design makes the conflict visible without turning him into a grotesque creature. His left side represents the human survivor; the corrupted eye and darker details on the right suggest the beast. His watch, associated with the first game, and Jade’s necklace preserve reminders of his past and personal ties. The studio has said it wanted subtle signs of transformation rather than features that would make him read as simply a monster.
What his beast powers can—and cannot—do
The beast is a real gameplay state, not just a metaphor for anger. Kyle can unleash brief, powerful bursts against zombies, but Xbox Wire’s interview says he has little control over the ability at the beginning. After a burst, survival still calls for stealth, parkour and judgment; the power is not an always-on advantage or an invulnerability mode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.“Don’t mistake the Beast-like powers for a god mode,” Techland franchise director Tymon Smektała told Xbox Wire. “It’s rewarding and fun, but your most important weapon is still your brain.”
So, did Kyle become a monster?
Physically, he has become something other than an ordinary human: his body carries human and viral traits, and his beast power can threaten his control. But the story distinguishes that transformation from losing his identity. Kyle remains capable of choosing connection over isolation and helping others rather than serving only his revenge. The answer is both: hybrid in body, still Kyle in identity and agency.
