There is no single best virtual-world game for everyone. Choose VRChat for social spaces, avatars, and events; Roblox for a wide variety of creator-made experiences; and consider Minecraft or Fortnite if you want familiar games that also offer shared, explorable worlds. You do not necessarily need a VR headset: VRChat, for example, supports desktop play as well as VR and mobile access.
What counts as an online virtual world?
A virtual-world game is an online game or platform where people enter a shared or explorable 3D environment, often as avatars, to socialize, play, build, or visit spaces made by other users. The label covers different formats, not one standardized genre. Epic’s Fortnite documentation describes the social 3D idea as “an online social entertainment experience in real time, where people play and connect in a 3D world” (Epic Developer Community).

Some worlds are designed as continuous environments; other platforms collect many separate games or experiences under one roof. The International Telecommunication Union’s 2023 comparison discusses both models, alongside features such as persistence, synchronous interaction, user-generated content, and immersion (ITU journal article). These are useful ways to compare platforms, not requirements every game must meet.

Which online virtual worlds can you explore with friends?
Choose VRChat for social discovery
VRChat centers on visiting user-created worlds and meeting people through avatars, groups, and events. Its official getting-started guide says a VR headset is not required: a modern Windows computer can run the game in desktop mode (VRChat Help, updated August 22, 2026). Its official site also lists desktop/PC VR, standalone VR, and mobile access. World availability and performance can vary by device, so check compatibility for the worlds you want to visit.
Choose Roblox for variety
Roblox calls its user-made spaces “experiences.” They range from games to communication and learning spaces, visual showcases, concerts, and simulations. Roblox says avatars can persist across experiences, while creators can publish to mobile, console, desktop, and VR (Roblox Creator Hub). Think of it as a platform containing many separate experiences, rather than one continuous open world.

Consider Minecraft and Fortnite for familiar worlds
Minecraft and Fortnite appear in the Australian eSafety Commissioner’s 2023 survey of metaverse users, but that report does not establish their current device support, editions, multiplayer setup, or detailed experience catalogs. Check the relevant game’s current official information before choosing a version or arranging cross-device play.

Do you need a VR headset?
No. A headset is optional for exploring virtual-world games as a category. VRChat specifically supports desktop play on a modern Windows computer and lists mobile access alongside VR options. A headset is relevant if you want its VR mode, but the sources here do not compare headset models, prices, comfort, or value. Confirm that the game and worlds you want support a device before buying hardware.

How to choose the right virtual world
Start with what you actually want to do, then check the device and social features that matter for your group.
- Activity: Decide whether you want to socialize and attend events, build in a sandbox, play structured games, or browse creator-made experiences.
- World structure: Check whether the platform offers one continuous environment or a collection of separate worlds and activities.
- Devices: Confirm support for your desktop, mobile device, console, standalone VR headset, or PC-connected VR setup. Support can differ between a platform and an individual experience.
- Creation and avatars: If making worlds or customizing an avatar matters, check what players can create and whether avatar choices carry across experiences.
- Social comfort: Review the platform’s current age guidance, privacy and communication settings, and ways to block, leave, or report unwanted interactions.
- Cost: Check the current price, regional availability, subscription requirements, and in-platform purchase model for the platform and specific experience you plan to use.
Social play and safety
Virtual worlds can offer lively social experiences, but they can also expose players to unwanted interactions. In a 2023 Australian eSafety Commissioner survey of 259 metaverse users, 71% reported at least one negative experience in the preceding 12 months. The report recorded experiences including being left out (23%), being called offensive names (21%), and receiving repeated unwanted messages or contact (16%). These are results for that survey group, not a current risk ranking of individual platforms (Australian eSafety Commissioner report).

For a particular platform or experience, review its current age guidance, privacy settings, communication controls, and blocking and reporting options. Caregivers should consider those settings alongside the audience and content of the specific worlds a child plans to visit.
What the survey figures do—and do not—say
The same Australian survey asked respondents which experiences they had played or experienced: Minecraft was reported by 44%, Fortnite by 40%, VRChat by 37%, and Roblox by 32%. The base was 259 Australian metaverse users in 2023. These percentages describe that respondent group; they are not global player counts, market shares, or ratings of game quality.

Roblox also documents creator monetization through methods such as in-experience purchases, ads, avatar items, and plugins (Roblox Creator Hub). VRChat documents paid world features, avatar access, and group roles as part of its creator economy (VRChat Creation). Those platform economies can shape what users encounter, but they do not by themselves establish what a player will pay in any particular experience.
