Where do the batteries go?
Batteries are for the wireless controller, not the console. Microsoft’s Xbox Support covers console power separately from wireless-controller batteries; the console receives power through its power supply.
What batteries does an Xbox 360 wireless controller use?
Microsoft’s wireless-controller manual specifies two AA (LR6) batteries in the AA battery pack. Its safety instructions call for alkaline AA batteries and advise against mixing old and new cells.
The manual also lists the Xbox 360 Rechargeable Battery Pack, sold separately from the controller, as an alternative to disposable AAs.

Can you play without batteries?
Use a wired controller
A wired Xbox 360 controller does not need the wireless controller’s battery pack. Microsoft listed a wired controller among Xbox 360 accessories; see its Xbox 360 accessories announcement.
Use a rechargeable pack with Play & Charge
The Play & Charge Kit lets you charge an installed rechargeable battery pack while playing. Microsoft’s Play & Charge Kit manual warns not to connect the charge cable unless a rechargeable battery pack or AA battery pack is installed, because doing so can damage the controller.

Which controller power option should you choose?

Choose based on what you already have: AAs are the straightforward option if your controller has its AA battery pack, while a compatible rechargeable pack or wired controller removes the need to keep replacing disposable cells.
