For Xbox Wireless Controllers that support wired USB play, a compatible USB cable powers the controller while you play, so it does not need its installed batteries to operate in wired mode. Plugging it in does not recharge ordinary AA batteries. The port and battery setup vary by controller model, so check your controller before choosing a cable or rechargeable accessory.
What happens when you plug in an Xbox controller?
On supported Xbox Wireless Controllers, connecting a compatible cable to the console lets you play wired. Microsoft says the Xbox One controller automatically switches to wired operation when connected with micro-USB, preserving battery life. The current USB-C Xbox Wireless Controller is also advertised for wired gaming with its included USB-C cable.
That describes the controller’s operating power while wired; it is not a promise that every Xbox-branded controller has the same port or battery arrangement. Check the port on your controller and its model-specific guidance.
Does plugging it in charge the batteries?
No. A USB cable does not charge ordinary AA batteries installed in the controller. For wireless use with rechargeable AA cells, charge them in a separate charger. Another option is a compatible Xbox rechargeable battery pack. Confirm compatibility with your controller model before buying.

Which cable or power option should you use?

Microsoft lists “AA batteries for up to 40 hours of battery life” on its Xbox Wireless Controller product page. That is a manufacturer estimate, not guaranteed runtime: Microsoft says battery life varies with headsets, other accessories, usage, and other factors.
