Horror is part of the premise, but the official description frames fishing and exploration—not combat—as the core activities. Whether that balance suits you depends on how much mystery and unease you want alongside a methodical fishing routine.
What kind of game is DREDGE?
Developed by Black Salt Games and published by Team17, DREDGE launched on March 30, 2023, according to its Steam listing. You captain a trawler around a remote archipelago, catch fish, sell your haul, upgrade your boat, and follow quests and local stories. Steam describes more than 125 deep-sea denizens, along with collectibles and equipment that open access to deeper waters and farther-off places.

That makes the documented play loop a mix of fishing, exploration, inventory management, boat progression, and mystery. Steam’s user-defined tags include horror and Lovecraftian themes, and the official DREDGE website describes a sinister undercurrent. Calling it “cozy horror” is an interpretation, not an official genre label; the available descriptions establish the contrast between fishing adventure and unease, not how frightening every player will find it.
How long is DREDGE?
Black Salt Games estimates 12–20 hours to finish everything in its Steam FAQ. That is the developer’s estimate for an average player, not an independently measured completion-time range. The FAQ also mentioned a demo on Switch in March 2023 and said there were no plans for demos on other platforms at that time; that dated statement should not be taken as a current demo-availability guarantee.

- A double-sided poster featuring the all-new Complete Collector’s Edition artwork on one side and the original DREDGE artwork on the other.
- A fold-out nautical chart to help you navigate your way around The Marrows and the surrounding archipelagos, along with a sticker set of map markers.
- A complete compendium of all fish and their aberrant variants in a hardback volume, message from the developer and metal doubloon coin.
Is DREDGE scary?
The official material supports describing DREDGE as a fishing adventure with a horror undercurrent, rather than as a game whose main documented activity is combat. The game’s tension is part of its mystery framing, but the available sources do not establish a universal measure of scare intensity. If you are deciding whether the tone will work for you, treat “horror” as a meaningful part of the premise while recognizing that individual tolerance and interpretation vary.
What platforms and accessibility options does DREDGE offer?
The official website lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam platform families. Steam’s listing includes adjustable difficulty, color alternatives, camera-comfort options, custom volume controls, stereo sound, and keyboard-only play. Those are Steam listing details; the available information does not establish that every console version has identical settings or menu labels.

- Keeping Sane: If you want to survive the sea, you need to make sure your sanity is kept in check with the Panic system. Without it, you’ll be seeing deadly illusions, like terrifying aquatic creatures, false rocks you may crash your ship on, and much more.
- Oh Captain! My Captain!: Keep your boat in good shape with the boat upgrade menu, research opportunities and all-round repairs. Let it get too damaged and you’ll be one step closer to the grave.
What DLC and add-ons does DREDGE have?
The official Steam listing carries two expansions, The Pale Reach and The Iron Rig, along with Blackstone Key, the Original Soundtrack, and a Digital Artbook. The listing calls The Iron Rig the second official expansion and describes a constructable destination with its own story, items, and adversities that can be experienced at any stage of a playthrough. Check the current storefront for exact bundle contents and regional pricing, since those can change. The soundtrack and artbook are listed as digital Steam add-ons; this information does not establish physical editions or physical versions for every platform.
