In Dungeons & Dragons, “animal companion” can mean several different things. Under the revised 2024 rules, a Beast Master Ranger gets a combat partner called a Primal Companion; a familiar is a separate spirit summoned through Find Familiar, and a Druid can access that spell temporarily through Wild Companion. Which rules apply depends on whether your table is using the 2024 rules, the 2014 rules, or an option from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything.
What counts as an animal companion in D&D?
“Animal companion” is a useful informal phrase, not one universal rules feature. It might refer to a Beast Master Ranger’s rules-defined combat partner, a familiar summoned by a spell, or an ordinary animal that accompanies the party as a pet or nonplayer character. Those categories have different abilities and rules; having an animal in the story does not automatically give it a companion stat block or special combat actions.
For the revised fifth-edition rules, the main reference is the 2024 Player’s Handbook. Its Ranger companion is the Primal Companion. A familiar, by contrast, comes from Find Familiar, and the 2024 Druid’s Wild Companion feature offers one way to cast that spell. The 2014 Ranger’s Companion and the option introduced in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything are separate rules choices, not alternate names for the 2024 feature.
How the 2024 Beast Master’s Primal Companion works
The 2024 Beast Master chooses one of three companion stat blocks: Beast of the Land, Beast of the Sea, or Beast of the Sky. The player describes an appropriate animal appearance for the chosen block. In other words, the companion’s game mechanics come from the selected stat block; the animal’s look is a roleplaying choice. This does not mean every beast in the Monster Manual can be selected as a Primal Companion.

The 2024 Player’s Handbook includes 51 stat blocks overall, three of them for Ranger beast companions, according to D&D Beyond’s overview of the book. The three options give the player different broad themes and capabilities, but no one form is universally best. A useful choice depends on the campaign, terrain, party, and the role you want the companion to play.
Use the current Player’s Handbook text and its applicable errata for exact command rules, scaling, recovery, and other combat details. Those specifics are important when planning turns and survivability, and should not be inferred from a guide written for an older version. D&D Beyond’s 2024 Ranger comparison also distinguishes this feature from the Primal Companion option in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything.

How a familiar differs from a Beast Master companion
A familiar is a spirit that takes an animal form, rather than the Beast Master’s dedicated companion stat block. The current Find Familiar listing gives forms such as a bat, cat, frog, hawk, owl, rat, raven, spider, or weasel. A familiar obeys commands and is especially useful for utility: it can provide a telepathic link within 100 feet, and its master can use a Bonus Action to see and hear through it.
That scouting and sensory connection is not the same role as a Beast Master’s combat partner. In particular, the 2014 Find Familiar spell explicitly says the familiar cannot attack; treat that as a 2014 rule rather than assuming the wording is identical in every rules version. Check the version of the spell your table uses before relying on a familiar’s combat options.

| Option | Rules role | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 Beast Master Primal Companion | Ranger combat partner using one of the Land, Sea, or Sky stat blocks | A character whose subclass is built around a companion in encounters |
| Find Familiar | Summoned spirit in an animal form, with command, communication, and sensory utility | Scouting and information-gathering needs; combat permissions depend on the spell version |
| Ordinary pet or NPC animal | Story presence governed by the DM and applicable creature rules, not automatically a class feature | Roleplaying or campaign fiction when no companion feature is being used |
Can a Druid have an animal companion?
Under the 2024 rules, a Druid can use Wild Companion to cast Find Familiar without material components by expending a Wild Shape use or a spell slot. D&D Beyond’s 2024 Druid and Wild Shape explainer says the familiar disappears when the Druid finishes a Long Rest. This gives the Druid access to a familiar, not the Beast Master Ranger’s Primal Companion feature.
Which rules version should your table use?
D&D Beyond describes the 2024 Free Rules and 2014 Basic Rules as available alongside one another, while the 2024 core books are designed to be compatible with older books. Compatibility does not mean every version’s companion mechanics can be mixed without a decision. Ask the DM which Player’s Handbook, subclass options, spell text, and errata apply before building around a companion. See D&D Beyond’s 2024 Free Rules overview and its FAQ on the 2024 core rulebooks for the coexistence and compatibility context.

| 2014 Beast Master | Ranger’s Companion feature | Uses older beast-selection and command rules |

| 2014 familiar | 2014 version of Find Familiar | Its text explicitly prohibits the familiar from attacking |
D&D Beyond’s 2019 Beast Master guide discusses the 2014 Ranger’s Companion, including beast eligibility and action economy. Use it when your table is playing that legacy version, not as a guide to the 2024 Primal Companion. The 2024 comparison article likewise identifies the revised feature as distinct from the option in Tasha’s.

- Confirm the rules version. Establish whether the character uses the 2024 Beast Master, 2014 Ranger’s Companion, or the option from Tasha’s, and which version of Find Familiar is in force.
- Decide what job the companion should do. For a 2024 Beast Master, consider the broad Land, Sea, or Sky role and the campaign’s environments. For a familiar, prioritize scouting, senses, and utility rather than assuming it is a combat substitute.
- Check the exact rules text. Before planning a tactic, confirm how the creature is directed, what actions it can take, how it scales, and how it returns if lost in the relevant book and errata.
- Agree on table rulings. Ask the DM how an ordinary pet or animal NPC is handled, and whether the campaign permits a legacy option alongside revised rules.
There is no universal “best animal companion” across D&D editions and campaigns. A good choice is the one whose permitted rules, capabilities, and fictional role match what the character and party actually need.
