No. Avowed is a single-player RPG with no multiplayer or co-op mode. Its companions fight alongside you as in-game characters; they are not other players. There is no established official co-op option or working co-op mod to recommend.
Can you play Avowed with friends?
No. The released game is designed for one player, and there is no official mode for joining another player’s game. Companions may accompany you and fight in your party, but another person cannot take control of them as a co-op partner.
Why is Avowed single-player?
Multiplayer was considered during development, but Obsidian removed it from the plan. In a 2024 interview, creative director Carrie Patel described implementing multiplayer as both a creative and technical challenge. She said the team focused on the experience it wanted players to get from an Obsidian RPG: “a really well-developed story, meaningful choices and consequences, and the ability to be the agent of change in the world.” Patel also acknowledged that multiplayer RPGs can support meaningful stories, citing Larian’s work; her explanation was about Avowed’s priorities, not a claim that story and multiplayer are incompatible. Are companions a form of co-op?
No. Companions are characters in the game’s party who fight alongside the player. They provide a party-based single-player experience, not shared control or online play. Xbox Wire’s launch announcement describes them as characters who join the player’s adventure, while listing the game across several platforms; platform availability does not mean cross-play or cross-platform co-op. Could multiplayer or a co-op mod arrive later?
Future support is unknown. Windows Central’s post-launch guide, published February 18, 2025, reported no public indication that Obsidian planned to add multiplayer.
